3 iPad apps for volume and surface area investigations - 14 views

  •
"This week, Grade 5 began a unit on Volume, Capacity and Surface Area. On a weekly basis, I take combined groups from the 4 grades consisting of the higher achievers, while the classroom teachers concentrate on the mainstream group and students needing more individual instruction to achieve success. I made a conscious decision this week to focus on using iPads with my group to explore both volume/capacity as well as surface area."

Hands On: iKeyboard Brings Touch Typing to the iPad [Macworld / iWorld 2012] | Cult of Mac - 6 views

  •
"The iKeyboard was another Kickstarter success story at Mocworld / iWorld 2012, garnering over 6 times what the required threshold was for funding. Its mission is to "addresses the one drawback of a tablet computer" which is the inability to touch type on the iPad's virtual keyboard. Again, I'm not a fast typist - I definitely need to work on that to improve my overall productivity when writing. The iKeyboard gives me the opportunity to work on that on what is often my primary writing tool."

Learning and Sharing with Ms. Lirenman: Using an iPad in a Grade One Classroom - 7 views

"Since November I've had the privledge of teaching with an iPad in my grade one class. Along the way I have discovered a lot of great ways to use it to help my students have their individual learning needs met.  Having just one iPad did bring about its own set of challenges but we were very lucky to have access to some additional iPads in the final term of school.  Next year we will have  iPads again thanks in part to my participation in my school's successful innovative learning grant application and another special project I'm involved with at the school district level.  Needless to say my head has been spinning all summer with ways I can integrate this technology into my classroom with out loosing sight of the important non technology based teaching and learning my students need too."

      Of course they will!
  • “We think there are many areas in special education where this kind of technology can be successful, but we need data to make good decisions.”

What of our tacit knowledge about learning, including that knowledge about the students?  Is this no good?  Can we not act upon what we know and not solely upon sterile data from a test?

Granted, the iPad has potential in school, but this article, among many others, is so vague at how the device is different other than the screen size and a mention of it's price tag.   iPads seem to be going the way of the IWB.   I still contend that these won't be successful until they are made personal.  Meaning, give it to the kid to have for the entire year.  Let them take it home, play with it, read on it, correspond on it and make their learning personal.   I'm currently in a pilot with iPads and the students are lukewarm to the device because they know it will go away or that they won't be able to make it work for them personally.

iPads for education? | Teacher's Monthly - 3 views

  • Elkanah have a set of iPads that roam around from class to class. Both schools found it important for the teachers to be acquainted with the technology before the learners began using it in school. Elkanah provided teachers with iPads six months before implementing the system with learners. Stadler found that this approach worked best and that hands-on staff training was very important. Elkanah selected their Grade 6 teachers, being the most technology-enthused group in the school, to take part in the iPad project. “Sharing ideas and collaborating amongst each other while using the device as a personal device first, before taking it to the classroom, was a key to success,” said Stadle

"Great iPad apps play a huge part in making the iPad such a massive success and the leader in the tablet arena. Just as I did in 2010, I've tried out scores of iPad apps this year - and once again some are mediocre, some are poor, and happily many are outstanding. So I'd like to share my choices for Best iPad Apps of 2011 here."
