"One question I seem to get a lot about the iPad is what apps do I recommend that are free. I am hearing from a lot of teachers that they have no way to add paid apps and thus are stuck trying to find free apps. My experience is that many free apps stink. They have many adds, require in app purchases to be useful, or are just junk. I tend to stay away from most free apps. So what are you to do if the district controls adding paid apps? My suggestion is to build relationships with the decision makers. Don't just ask for a bunch of apps, instead provide documentation and purpose for a few apps you would like to have. I know this process takes time and effort but if you can show the purpose and learning you have a much better chance. If you need lesson ideas I suggest checking out my Pinterest page, and three of my favorite Pinterest pages: iPadsammy, TechChef4u, and Sue Gorman. Look for apps and lesson ideas there and modify them to fit your standards and kids. If I was starting from scratch this is the $10 iPad app setup I would push for in my kindergarten classroom. We Want Apps is a free iPad and iPhone app for discovering new apps for kids. I discovered We Want Apps on David Kapuler's blog and immediately gave it a try on my iPad. With We Want Apps installed on your iPad you can search for apps according to the age of your students, the platform (iPhone or iPad), and price (free or paid). After choosing your search criteria you will be given a list of apps. Click on an app in the search results list to read a detailed description of that app.

SO... WHAT IS PADILICIOUS? PADILICIOUS.COM, when viewed on your Mac, is an entirely different site than what you're seeing here. The other site (to view, tap here) contains free Mac OS X tools for automatically generating interactive web-apps for the iPad. And these web-apps can be easily shared with others, by using the free tools to automatically upload them to your MobileMe sites folder. For example, tap one of the images below, and rotate your iPad horizontally, to view an interactive photo carousel/slideshow web-app that was automatically created by simply selecting images on the Mac and applying a Mac OS X service to them! By the way, these example web-apps are meant to viewed fullscreen on the iPad, so after tapping their thumbnail images, tap the plus sign (+) in the Safari toolbar to add them to your homescreen as links. Livestream is an excellent video streaming service similar to ustream.tv which now has a Procaster feature available for Macs with a new feature that alllows you to stream directly from your desktop to an iphone or ipodtouch! Very exciting new feature!

"We have talked about the photo enhancement Universal app SnapSeed before. The free photo tuning app offers the features of the higher end photo editing apps with a nice finger interface. Import a image, choose what you want to do to the image, move your finger up/down to choose which tool to use, then a left/right swipe to adjust the amount of the effect to apply. A particularly nice feature SnapSeed provides is pinpoint tuning. For example, lighten just a single spot of an image rather than applying a full image filter."

This looks like a really useful app. Free and when paired with its other free companion with a similar name, you'll have much better understanding and control of your data usage...and maybe save some money on the process.
