iPads in Education -S14

Developed by the New Jersey Education Association, this article is organized into three sections: content area apps, apps to support students with special needs, and productivity apps. This article does not describe or review many apps specifically, but rather provides links to other resources that do so.

Subject Area: Science (Earth/Physical Science, Meteorology) I teach four sections of Earth/Physical Science to 9th graders and one section of Meteorology to 11th and 12th graders. In looking at available iPad apps not only for these specific science disciplines, but for science in general, they are readily available. After examining each of the apps listed, I would consider using most, if not all of the apps provided. Disciplines include Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, General Reference (glossaries, etc.), Tools (timers, conversions, etc.) and a miscellaneous category (Mythbusters, Popular Science, etc.)

3. On this site you will find a list of different resources for websites that will have lsits of apps. The reason I liked this site is because it is a good place to start depending on what type of app you are looking for and for what age. I particularly like the link to the site "Fun Education Apps" http://www.funeducationalapps.com/best-math-apps-for-kids/ . This was great for 4th grade and has many content area resources.

This site has 41 apps that pertain to fourth graders. Some of them are more general and are not content specific, but there are also many such as "instaGrock" and "KidBlog" that are going to be wonderful to explore for projects.

Lots of resources for apps, iPad artists, lessons, student work exemplars, etc.

The Jeffreys Grove Elementary School has approximately 45 content area apps geared to 3 - 5. Short description of each app is given as well as a link to the iTunes store.

The Appolicious.com site has over recommended 100 apps in the four main content areas: ELA, math, science, and social studies. A detailed review, as well as score out of 100, is provided for each app.

The website offers resources for educational web tools and mobile apps. Good apps for classroom management and productivity among others. Reviews of the functionality of apps by search criteria are very helpful.
