There is still no decision from the Attorney-General's department for the introduction of an R18+ rating even after a landslide in the number of supporters for the introduction of the rating. It's getting a bit ridiculous now. The public sphere in Australia will hopefully pull us into line with the rest of the globe...

In what appears to be a direct warning to the Australian founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange had his passport confiscated for a period of time at Melbourne Airport (on the basis that it looked worn) and then had his bags searched, being questioned on about his 1991 criminal record for hacking offences. Wikileaks published the confidential list of sites that would form the blacklist under the Australian government's proposed net filter. Coincidence? I think not.

Further, Assange was interrviewed on Dateline last night and said that Wikileaks was potentially going to be investigated by the Australian Federal Police over the leak. Julian Assange is hassled and detained by customs entering Melbourne airport. Then a Fed pulls him over again in arrivals and questions him on an old hacking charge. Punishment for the leaking the Black List perhaps? Surely not...

NSW Premiere Kristina Keneally is accused of lying on Twitter. She wasn't present at a vote and the Opposition whip suggests she didn't follow requried protocol to be excused. To defend herself she used Twitter. I wonder if this will become a standard means of defence for politicians as more are taking up Twitter, and can reach an audience instantly.

The topic of domain names as a commodity isn't new, but the prices auctions are fetching for names is. When $2 million is refused for 'jeans.com' it paints a picture of the cost/benefit ratio of domain investment - where the potential financial benefits are clearly outweighing initial costs. The trend developing is for multinational companies to buy domain names with commonly understood verbs (eg dating.com) or nouns (eg books.com). It strengthens their own branded domain name and targets consumers who are undertaking searches on the net for the thing they want - be it a service or good - as opposed to searching for the company that sells that thing. Does it suggest that searching habits are changing? Is brand awareness and brand loyalty losing power?

The conversation first looked at internet censorship from an international perspective covering issues of internet governance from and internet freedom. Unfortunately one or two members of the panel were prone to regurgitating policy rather than engaging in an actual debate. Towards the end inevitably the discussion was drawn to the proposed filtering laws within Australia. The general consensus from the panel members was that education had to be an essential part of policy when addressing online safety. Interestingly the government representative, the Minister for Home Affairs, was a keen supporter of this policy stance.

The news showed several international companies, not only Google are limited by internet governmance of Chinese government .

Although the State aims to ensure suffcient technological support for Internet censorship, it is still challenging for the system to monitor the online communicaion completely.

After the Secretary of State in the US Hillary Clinton's speech on Internet freedom, open source source code repository SourceForge.net blocked access to IP addresses originating in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria. Open source software provides important infrastructure to these oppressed and developing nations. I hope the American government can see what a blow this is to the infrastructure and fledgling industries in these countries.

South Korea, the world's most wired country, has been listed as an "Enemy of the Internet" by the Paris-based rights watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) for its draconian censorship. Now, North Korea has a company to talk how to effectively contorl people on the Net.

An international internet treaty has been drafted regarding controlling copyright infringments. ISPs are worried, because their role in the issue is greatly increased. Of course they don't like it, it means more responsibility for them. But it is also a cop out for the governments, as they propose to share the regulatory role with unelected organisations.

The initial announcement last year about the federal government's proposal of a National Broadband Network was met with a lot of scepticism. I think that despite its flaws, the network seems quite necessary considering the inequality of access experienced by thousands of Australians due to the broad geographical scope of the country.
