Teachers get glimpse of future : - 0 views

  •
Along with the Activboard, the district can get an Activote and Activexpression. these are tools that the students can use to take quizzes and tests. they can select an answer to a multiple choice question, answer true/false and yes/no questions and write answers and then send them to the screen. Once the students answer the question, the teacher can see right away how many students got it right and exactly who got it right and wrong. the students' names can be written on the board or they can be assigned a number so teachers can identify their responses. Also, teachers can take the scores from the quiz or test and drop them into their grade book.

The false dichotomy of The want to vs The have - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
We struggle to achieve balance with so many parts of our lives. We see things in dichotomies and try to weigh one against the other believing that we must give time to one and not the other. This tendency to see things in often false dichotomies leads to the problem of the "want to' vs the 'have to'. Unfortunately, when we are faced with this dilemma we often make a choice in favour of the 'have to' but we chose this option for the wrong reasons.

Encouraging Persistence - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. the slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race." ― Calvin Coolidge Growing up, I had a copy of this quote on my wall. It is one of those things that stuck with me over the years. For a long time I might not have truly appreciated its wisdom. Now as a teacher in times of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, its significance seems to have grown. When we can instantaneous consumers of the all of the worlds information, as we access anything and everything at the speed of light, how do we learn the value of persistence?

Introduction - 0 views

Pupils should be able to name a selection of light sources, including the sun, and identify some of the uses of light in the environment. the first two parts of the activity asks pupils to sort a collection of items into those which are sources of light and those which are not. the rest of the activity deals with uses of light in the environment, asking pupils to identify the source of light in a picture and to say what the light is used for.

Photos, videos, animations and interactive exercises teach about such topics as photosynthesis, wetland types and mechanisms, wetland plants and animals, formation and succession, food webs and the impact of humans on this vital ecosystem. Interactive concept maps and context-sensitive help ensure that users never get lost. Definitions and pronunciations make the text accessible to students with a wide range of reading levels. Even very young children can enjoy many activities, as well as videos and pictures. Students love playing the electronic version of the predator-prey string game. Teacher and Student versions of the workbook materials are included on the disc in PDF, Word, RTF and Ascii formats, allowing you to print just what you need, when you need it, as well as customizing the materials if needed.

How might we confront the challenges of time and "the system"? - the Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Two forces seem to present the most significant obstacle to educators hoping to achieve these illustrious goals for and with their learners. the first is time, the second is "the system". Together these two factors act as a bulwark to change; the constraints within which progress is able to occur but only to the point that it strikes against the seemingly immutable obstacles.

A curriculum built on the fundamental questions of our disciplines - the Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
As we make plans for how we will engage our students in their learning the decisions we make become fundamental to how they will grow to understand the purposes of learning. How our learners approach the curriculum and the disciplines is fundamental to the outcomes we may achieve for them. One path will set them up to view learning as the acquisition of information the other to see it as a process of asking and exploring questions of significance through the many unique lenses.

Change and why we all see it differently - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
If the young people of today are to thrive beyond the walls of the classroom they will need to be able to cope with a world characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. the children of todays Kindergarten will enter the workplace in the fourth-decade of the 21st Century. We debate the merits of teaching 21st Century Skills and what they might be while teaching children who have lived their entire lives in that very century. the challenge is how will schools and individual teachers respond to this drive for urgent change.

Sharing our Puzzles of Practice - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Einstein is often quoted as having said "If I have an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than five minutes." Clearly Einstein understood how to attack puzzling problems. As teachers we face a host of puzzles on a daily basis. Every student we teach, thanks to their idiosyncrasies presents a unique puzzle. the interactions between students further complicates things. Our goals for our learners, their learning needs, the demands of the curriculum, pressures from beyond the classroom all result in puzzles for us to manage and to solve.

Reflecting on report writing time - How might we maximise the value? - the Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
For schools in Australia and many parts of the world, we are heading towards the end of another school term and year. That means report writing season. For the next few weeks, teachers across the country will be huddled in front of computer screens, writing reflections on the progress their learners have made. Mark books will be opened, assessments consulted, work samples will be reviewed. All so that in the first week of the long Summer vacation students can sit and read their report and make plans for how they will enhance their learning in the coming year.

Why didn't that work? Maybe its culture? - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
n practical terms, any change effort that does not consider the culture into which it is introduced is unlikely to succeed. the worst-case scenario is that the change effort is resisted to such a degree that it is never truly implemented. In many cases, however, the change effort fails to produce the sort of results initially imagined despite the efforts of all involved to adopt the change. Although the new behaviours are adopted, something goes wrong, and it isn't always that the new idea itself is to be blamed. - Maybe it's culture?

Telling a new story of learning and school - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
One of the key ways by which we make sense of our world is by analysing the stories that we and others use to describe it. these stories are a construct of our experiences, our beliefs, our cultural perspectives and the interactions between these things. Even when the context in which the story is set is the same, the details and nature of the story that particular individuals or collective share can differ vastly. Only by listening to each story with empathy and genuine desire to understand each individual's telling of this story do we develop true insights. Making sense of the stories of education should be a key process for all educators.

Taking time to design programmes for understanding - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Identifying what our children need to learn is one of the most important processes within education. For the teacher this is the question they engage with as they design their teaching and learning units. By no means is this an easy task and the teacher must balance multiple factors to ensure that the programmes they design provide their students with the learning they require. Even the most effective sequence of lessons is of little value if what it sets out to teach has little importance in the lives our learners are likely to lead.

Maker Education on a Budget - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
There is growing interest from schools in The Maker Movement and Maker Education but with this have come some subtle misunderstandings about what it is all about. For one The modern maker movement is all about The mindset of The maker raTher than developing a set of specific skills for making. The second confusion stems from a belief that The maker movement is all about The tools and The makerspace and that as such it involves large budgets.
