Righthaven Targets Nevada Senate Candidate for 'R-J' Copyright Violation By: E&P Staff Published: September 06, 2010 CHICAGO Righthaven has been criticized for filing copyright lawsuits against obscure bloggers and Websites that post newspaper articles without permission. But now it is going after a much bigger fish - the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Nevada and Tea Party favorite, Sharron Angle. The Las Vegas Review-Journal, in an article by Carri Geer Thevenot, reported over the weekend that Righthaven had filed a federal lawsuit Friday. Complaining Angle reprinted two Review-Journal pieces -- an editorial and a news article -- on her campaign website without permission. "Righthaven LLC vigorously enforces the copyrighted work of Review-Journal reporters, columnists and editors," Mark Hinueber, R-J vice president and general counsel, said in a statement to the newspaper. "We expect everyone to comply with the copyright laws of the United States. It is never appropriate to utilize entire Review-Journal articles or columns without prior, express written permission of the newspaper." As in past lawsuits accusing other parties of re-publishing R-J material without permission, it appears Righthaven did not warn the Angle campaign it was preparing legal action over the alleged copyright violation. Angle's campaign had no immediate comment, the R-J reported. Righthaven has filed more than 100 lawsuits in federal court in Las Vegas alleging copyright violations, the R-J reported.
