MozJPEG 3.0 - 0 views

  •
Mozilla has done a study of image formats and concluded that WebP and JPEG XR are not a big-enough improvement over well-optimized JPEG. In the study only HEVC (H.265) was significantly better, but it's a patent-encumbered format, so it can't be used freely ( shhhh!) -- ked tak pozeram, co to dokaze s textom a komixovymi obrazkami, mozno by to vedelo priniest zvysenie kvality aj nasim obrazkom ukladanym v JPEGu

A look inside Facebook's source code - 2 views

  •
So what have we learnt today? I think the main thing to take away from this is you shouldn't use public services such as Pastebin to post internal source code. Some creepy guy like me is going to collect it all and write about it. Another thing is to make sure debug information is never pushed to production. I didn't put much effort in to this but there will be more of Facebook's source code floating around out there.

What Does an Idle CPU Do? - 1 views

  •
In the last post I said the fundamental axiom of OS behavior is that at any given time, exactly one and only one task is active on a CPU. But if there's absolutely nothing to do, then what?

SymbolHound: Search Better. Code Better. - 2 views

SymbolHound is a search engine that doesn't ignore special characters. This means you can easily search for symbols like &, %, and π. We hope SymbolHound will help programmers find information about their chosen languages and frameworks more easily. Example searches: === javascript scala => lisp #' ruby $$

Hacking Unicode - 3 views

  •
Unicode has always been a bit misunderstood even by professionals. This is why several years ago we pulled these slides together to clear things up. The presentation is a bit old but still relevant. You may still learn a few things about Unicode that you did not know.

Unix History Repository - 0 views

  •
commity Kernighana, Ritchieho, Bournea .. The goal of this project is to create a git repository representing the Unix source code history, starting from the 1970s and ending in the modern time. To fulfill this goal the project brings data from early snapshots, repositories, and primary research. The project aims to put in the repository as much metadata as possible, allowing the automated analysis of Unix history. The following table illustrates the type of material that can be gathered and integrated into the repository.

New Method For Analysing Fingerprints Uses Tiny Patterns Of Sweat - 2 views

  •
Fingerprints, as most of us know, are composed of whorls, loops and arches. But keep zooming in, and you'll find tiny, tiny sweat pores arranged in patterns equally unique. Scientists in Korea have found a new way to map those pores that could help identify decade-old fingerprint fragments.

Ruby Security Have You Not! - Hakiri - 0 views

  •
The first metric I was wondering about is the distribution of gems in Gemfiles. How many gems does a common Ruby developer use in their projects? The numbers are somewhat expected: the average number of gems per Gemfile is 113.08 with the standard deviation of 52.19.... The next question I had was how many of those gems contain at least one vulnerability? The numbers are staggering! 1,333 Gemfiles, or 66% of the total, are affected! I definitely didn't expect that two thirds of all projects would contain at least one publicly known vulnerability.
