There are many technologies that are beginning have a go at replacing books. Most of them contain technologies that deprive you of rights that in many cases are contained in laws.

OttoBib is a dead simple bibliography generator for book sources. Just enter ISBN codes of books separated by commas, select citation type (e.g. MLA, APA) and click "Get Citations". Thats it!

This library has great resource books and tutorials on anything from authoring of web based tests, to using audacity, to basic numeracy....a really fab selection of visually stimulating book like interfaces. You can download it as exe files (some gave me hassles and showed up as trojans but was fine or you can download the actual reader to view it with

To build it, we need hundreds of millions of book records, a brand new database infrastructure for handling huge amounts of dynamic information, a wiki interface, multi-language support, and people who are willing to contribute their time, effort, and book data. To date, we have gathered about 30 million records (20 million are available through the site now), and more are on the way. We have built the database infrastructure and the wiki interface, and you can search millions of book records, narrow results by facet, and search across the full text of 1 million scanned books.

The best days of librarianship are ahead of us. However, to get there the field must step back, refocus, and reexamine our core principles. We as a profession have become so focused on the trees of standards and process that we are now at risk from missing the larger forest of opportunities. This talk presents a view of a new librarianship, one focused on knowledge and action instead of artifacts and collection. The presentation will look beyond the trends of today's technologies to a durable new librarianship that focuses on innovation, leadership, and service.
