Why is an emerging economy like India doing so badly on human development index? - 0 views

  •
"At the heart of India's skewered development story lies the paradox between India's phenomenal GDP growth and its abysmal score on human development." And this is exactly what captures the idea of HDI as a composite indicator of economic development. India is the proof that despite enormous economic growth (GDP growth), there has been no economic development. Although HDI has its drawbacks and presents a skewed image of the reality, the educational and health perspective each correctly depicts the Indian situation, making India one of the countries with the least HDI.

Gas prices increased in California about 0.39 cents between September 21 and October 7. To decrease prices Gov. Jerry brown ordered to make an early transition to winter-blend gasoline which evaporates more quickly. This move could increase supply by as much as 10% said Gov. Brown.

Helium and 128,000 foot jump - 0 views

  •
Felix Baumgartner from Austria recently jumped from 128,000 to simultaneously break the sound barrier, and world records. To get there he rode in a 55 story balloon with around $100,000 worth of Helium gas. This is an extremely large one-time purchase, and I would think that it upset the market equilibrium by a considerable amount.

increasing excise taxes might decrease deaths from noninfectious diseases - 0 views

  •
according to the article, increasing excise taxes, encouraging smoke-free public places, and reducing salt and trans fat in food might help decrease deaths from noninfectious diseases. It would make sense because, if excise taxes are imposed, demand will slightly fall. Also if smoke-free places are encouraged, non-smokers will not have to be exposed to smoke all the time.

End of gas rationing signals progress in New York City's Sandy recovery - 0 views

  •
After Sandy hurricane devastated the Eastern Coast of the United States, gas became scarce. Due to this, authorities introduced so called odd-even gas rationing which limited the consumption the same as when governments introduce price ceilings and shift the demand curve to the last. With few major differences. Too many people needed fuel to power generators. Government gave subsidy to oil importers, so price slumped a bit (not significant) - so this was the maximum price. Simultaneously, also the demand grew bigger and there were only a few gas stations operating and those who were operating experienced inevitable chaos. So authorities shift the demand curve to the left until equilibrium is reached at maximum price to limit the consumption, so that queues were manageable. This rationing ends tomorrow as recovery is completed.

Could derelict airport be Greece's economic savior? - CNN.com - 1 views

  •
The government of Greece decided to put an old airport (twice as big as Central Park) for sale for 6 billion euros. In this way, the government would sell this old area to a private owner, therefore creating 9,000 jobs for Greece and helping the government and the country. We can say that this is price control, since the Greek government gave the price for the area, and is trying to stabilize/help the economy by creating a price for this area that could be used to help greatly Greece. In fact, not only jobs would be given but tourism would increase greatly (as well as the Greek income).

Oil platform explosion in Gulf of Mexico, 11 injured, 2 missing. - 0 views

  •
The article talks about how an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico exploded and caused 11 injuries and 2 people missing. This is an expample of a negative externality, because now the company will have to pay for any health treatment the workers will have to take, and they will also have to use their time trying to find the 2 people missing. The company will lose money.

China's bank warns on inflation - 1 views

  •
the article talks about the warning Chinese bank is giving to the country on inflation. China is on "high alert" because of a reported jump in inflation of a 3.2%. China must really pay attention to inflation this time because as Mr. Zhou said in the past some economists thought that a high inflation was no big deal and they could control it after the economic growth but international experience show that it might not be correct.

Hidden corruption in Spain - 0 views

  •
This article is a perfect example of economics and corruption. Corruption if when money within governmental lines is distributed "off the chart", something citizens don't like since it could have ben used for their benefit. In this case, the money came from donations from companies and individuals. If we apply this to the flow chart of a macroeconomy, there is negatives from both households and fabrics, but no input. Though, the input gets there by the government employees spending more. So there is a hidden extra flow that should not be there.

Unemployment - 1 views

  •
We started macroeconomics and I thought finding an article about unemployment would hit the target! So this article discusses how the government keeps track of how many unemployed citizens there are. It's called the Current Population Survey which is conducted monthly by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. If you've ever heard of the Census, it's kind of like that. The article also looks at how the unemployment rates have increased or decreased throughout the years and how there are some citizens that do not fit either category "These people are not employed, but they also don't fit the government's definition of the unemployed." The government is searching for ways to improve unemployment.

Beijing residents choke in record smog levels - 2 views

  •
This article shows how the air in China is getting more polluted every year, and the population has only two choice: stay home or go around with a mask, hoping not to have any breathing problems. This connects with tragedy of the commons, since air is a common and people pollute it by using cars without thinking about the consequences. China is so populated, that the large use of cars is highly polluting the streets. In addition, there are industries that pollute and nothing is being done because air is a common.

Gas prices increase by 14 cents in half a month - 1 views

  •
Gas being an inelastic product, has a small change in demand if the price is increased. It was a good time to increase the price of oil because "The improvement in the nation's economic health has increased demand for oil" so there would be an increase in revenue if the price was increased.

Greeks pushed to work more to pay debt - 0 views

  •
This article talks about the scarcity of jobs for citizens living in Greece. Greek citizens are not having much luck finding any occupations, even simple ones such as working as a waiter in a restaurant or working in a supermarket. This is mostly a dilemma for the Greek youth, furthermore, data shows that more than half of the citizens under the age of 25 are out of work. The greatest challenge for employers is not a lack of cheap labor but a shortage of demand for their products, therefore, due to the fact that their products aren't selling they can't hire people because their company will be going into debt.

Daily stampede of Chinese 'grey traders' angers Hong Kong - 0 views

  •
Because of the people's declining trust in the safety of China made products there is an increasing demand for products made else where. Everyday people cart bulk packages of coffee, diapers, and ramen, onto Hong Kong's trains to get them into china. Their destination is the shelve's of corner shops, who make a bigger profit selling "imported" goods. This is an example of scarcity of resources.

Money scarcity - 0 views

  •
I chose the article because it was talking about how Syria was giving a $25-million reward for the capture of the president. I thought it related to scarcity because, now a days, money is very important for a person to sustain life, and if they wanted to capture the president the best way was giving a lot of money so people would do it as fast as possible. If people have an opportunity to get a lot of money, they will take it. Money is a limited resource; it is scarce and it will always be. If the government decided to print more money, then every time we would have more money to spend and everything would be more expensive.
