This is an incredible app for students with special needs. It connects to the Bookshare.org database and does require a membership ID. However, students and organizations who qualify have access to a tremendous resource.  "From within Read2Go, you can browse, search, download, and read books directly from Bookshare using your Bookshare membership, as well as read DAISY books from other sources. The app gives you full control over visual choices for font size and color, background and highlighting color, and text-to-speech preferences. Read2Go features word-by-word highlighting for multi-modal reading."

The Virginia Department of Education helped to create this list of apps for students. You can download them from the Apple App Store. Some of them include digital texts from Pearson publishers.

Screen share from a Mac or PC to an iPad.  Mac app will create a code, enter the code into the iPad app and the screen will appear. FREE & 250 viewers at once per screen.

This app has been featured in the Apple iPad commercials for teaching young students to write their letters. Beyond the ability to trace, the app also records letter sounds, names, and phonograms.

This could be the best $.99 spent on an app. Tools 4 Students includes 25 graphic organizers that can be annotated in the app and then shared via email. 

Though an iPhone app, this would also work on an iPad. Star Walk is a very cool app that essentially is a mobile planetarium. Find visible stars and planets overhead and take the classroom outside.

This free app combines the best of Panoramio and Google Maps into one app. Think of using this to export the settings of novels, the geography or culture of a historical location, or a virtual field trip.

This app, for $4.99, allows students to create their own animations. Though the app has an associated cost, the web version (http://doink.com) is free. Unfortunately, the web version won't run in Safari on the iPad. Cool regardless.

Apple has released this development guide for those looking to create their own apps. This could be useful for teachers interested in having their students create their own apps.

This app that allows you to split the screen on your iPad so that you can view multiple apps at one time - much like on a computer. It also has Dropbox support, and a Pro version is available.

This is a great app for elementary aged students. They can practice telling a story by using the visual prompts. It records their narration into the app to play back later.
