My Best of series | Larry Ferlazzo's Websites of the Day… - 1 views

  •
AN AMAZING RESOURCE!!! "I've separated my "The Best…" lists here by topics. A number of the lists, though, can fit into multiple categories, so it still might be useful to scan all of them. The Websites Of The Year page on this blog, on the other hand, has these lists in the chronological order in which they've been written. Please note that I continually update and revise all of the lists."

How To Handle Content Filtering For iPads In The Classroom (And At Home) | Cult of Mac - 0 views

  • iPads, however, are a different story. Apple’s iOS sandboxing requirement for apps limits the ability of third-party developers to implement on-device filtering options that mirror what can be done on a Mac or PC. Proxy settings are technically an option, but the likely use of an iPad on multiple networks outside of the school’s network can make it difficult to implement them effectively. At this point, there are two approaches that schools can take to comply with these kinds of regulations. The first is to invest in an alternate iOS browser that include filtering capabilities. With a so-called safe browser installed and configured, Safari can be blocked using the iOS Restrictions feature. Any web access from the alternate browser complies with filtering laws. Certain other content restrictions can also be enabled for built-in iOS apps like YouTube. The problem is that a number of apps include built-in browsers that won’t be impacted by this approach. That presents a challenge to app selection and management, but may not be a deal breaker. Some safe browser options, which schools (or parents) may want to consider include K9, Mobicip, Child Safe. The other, more effective, option is to configure a VPN connection on each iPad, set it to apply for all Internet traffic, and make it mandatory for all Internet access off campus. That’s not difficult to do with mobile device management. When an iPad isn’t on the school’s network, it automatically connects to the school network via VPN and all traffic is routed through that connection and thus through the school’s filtering solution. The challenge here is that it will increase the load on the school network and Internet connectivity. More information about this approach can be found in Mobile Iron’s 23,000 Students, 7,000 iPads & iPhones webinar. Not all schools will need to meet these requirements by law or by policy, but even schools that aren’t required to do so may still choose to, anyway.

QR Codes Explained - 2 views

  •
QR codes are beginning to gain ground in the UK so I've decided to write an article covering the brief history of barcodes and the lead up to the introduction of QR Codes to give you an understanding of the technology. I've been in IT for 20 years and, as with most technically orientated people, I tend to fall into the 'techie' trap when writing articles explaining technology. The article normally ends up reading like a technical manual for NASA's space shuttle so I've made a conscious effort to stick to layman's terms to make the article clear for a wide audience.

iVisualiser Lets You Use your iPad as a Wireless Visualiser | The Whiteboard Blog - 2 views

  •
iVisualiser uses the iPads camera to grab images which you can then annotate and display on a large screen such as a whiteboard. If you have Apple TV or software such as AirServer then you can do this wirelessly. If not, then this will still work via a VGA cable. Use it to give the children a close up view of objects such as flowers or seeds without crowding around a table. Show examples of children's work or documents such as exam papers. One die has six "creation" apps, while the second die has six "showcase" apps. "

How to Restart iPhone / iPad Without Using Power Button & Home Button - 0 views

  •
"Ever needed to reboot an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that doesn't have a functioning power button or a Home button? It's tricky if not impossible, right? Even with the Assistive Touch on-screen buttons and variety of workarounds for a failed power button, rebooting an iOS device without working hardware buttons is a challenge, but it turns out that a few indirect tricks can work to get restart any iOS device, even if none of the physical buttons are working."

App Combo: Folidfy and QR Codes | Class Tech Tips - 1 views

  •
"This year at ISTE in Atlanta, I shared with teachers one easy way to add QR codes to three-dimensional shapes.   The app Foldify lets users create a template for a variety of three-dimensional shapes.  Instead of drawing a picture or adding family photos, I used a QR code generator on my iPad, saved the pictures to the Camera Roll, and placed them on my Folidify creation.  They are easy to assemble after your print them out and great for having students roll a dice for a mystery writing prompt or math problem."
