This paper looks at the use of cell phones for tours of cultural sites in Europe. Although several projects have experimented with IVR, SMS and even multimedia tours on standard and next-generation networks, take-up of this platform by museums has remained low in comparison to US activity, despite cell phone usage being more wide-spread and longer-developed than in North America. Through case studies of recent phone tour projects at Tate Modern and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, we examine what the key differences and similarities are between phone-based tours on the two continents, and what each can learn from the other.

On April 25, 2007 the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto launched a new online initiative called Collection X "This project, which has been in development for six years, represents a huge leap forward for the AGO not only because it makes works from the permanent collection available online but also because it makes it possible for the public to upload their own collections and to create exhibitions using the same application. As it has been conceived, Collection X is meant to function as an open-source museum that features public collections presented alongside collections created by the public." This afternoon I am going to try and answer this question, What can social media do for oral history. I am going to look at a few examples which caught my attention and talk about what we can learn from these projects.

Pepsi's Refresh Project is just over a month old now and based on what we've seen so far, is becoming the poster-child for successful blending of social responsibility and branding. Our own Kelli Peterson enthused as much in her early assessment of the campaign. While Pepsi isn't the first to use crowd sourcing for innovation - check out IdeaStorm or Reckitt Benckiser's idealink - we hope this application for the greater good is just the start of a long-term trend. Where Do We Go From Here? Continuing with Web 2.0 at the Brooklyn Museum "As we moved forward with Web 2.0 and social media in 2007, we had two objectives in mind while overhauling earlier initiatives and creating new projects for visitors: * Keep it real: We aimed to personalize content as much as possible, since Web 2.0 for the Brooklyn Museum is all about social connections and growing communities. * Deliver content their way: Museum surveys have shown that visitors want to consume more information in shorter visits. Hence, we wanted to allow our audiences to easily receive information from the Museum, and dynamically share it with others. We continued to focus on our community-oriented, visitor-centered mission, and these goals became paramount as we thought about (and adjusted) our early initiatives; they also served as philosophical barometers when we created new projects. "

Ironically,, I'm finding that the Indigenous groups are way more savvy about social media than this academic...So, we are posting images of objects on Flickr for people to think about before they come to Oxford to see them, have started a Facebook (invited) group for participants, and are thinking about other ways to use new media to create new relationships between museums and overseas source communities.
