For the most part, most technological advances are not so much hardware as they are software-oriented. Aside from making the hardware devices more compact and smaller, the focus is on speed, operating system, and functionality. Related to the topic but not in the article, I remember reading somewhere that gaming systems/companies usually come out with a new device every five years or so, but none have come out recently due to the potential still in the devices used today (specifically the wii, xbox 360 and ps3).
