Embattled Snowden email provider returns with new Dark Mail encryption service | The Verge - 2 views

  •
We heard from Mahrokh the other day about Snowden's email provider Lavabit shutting down -- turns out they've come back with a program called "Dark Mail." By the way, did you know that the email state employees (such as faculty like me who work at state-funded universities like GMU) are all technically public records? As long as the email isn't covered by student privacy acts like FERPA, anyone can request to see my GMU email because it's a public record. Technically.

wow, this is a great a article! I was actually thinking about what they were going to do after Lavabit and Silent Circle both closed their e-mail systems, especially since Zimmerman was not one of those people who seemed to stop coming up with new ideas. Its interesting to see how this new technology plays out.

A friend of mine on Twitter said that he remembers when the MIME format for email attachments was competing with the UUencode format for email attachments -- kind of like VHS versus Betamax. Here's the Wikipedia article on the format that lost.

  • The Web isn't the only system out there, but it's the most popular and widely used. (Examples of ways to access the Internet without using HTTP include e-mail and instant messaging.)

This article explains the difference between the internet and the WWW by describing the internet as a network of computers and the WWW as one of the modes we use to access certain files within this network. It also states that-- as we had discussed in class-- though the WWW is probably the most widely-used mode of accessing the internet, other ways, such as through email and instant messaging, are also available.

Here's the CLI program I used to read email at the University of Virginia in 1992, when I first started using the Internet. Again, not the web. It didn't exist yet.

Boy, I hate sites that have as many ads as that one does. The first site that that article links to is a bit better -- it's from the MIT Technology Review, which is an established and well-known journal / magazine. http://www.technologyreview.com/news/510176/when-will-the-rest-of-us-get-google-fiber/?utm_campaign=newsletters&utm_source=newsletter-daily-all&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20130205 If you live in Austin, TX, you can buy Internet service directly from Google. Maybe the rest of us will be able to soon.

Interesting fact from this news article about the effect of the Internet on the postal service: "Spokeswoman Sue Brennan said that letter mail volume is declining "so extremely," yet package volume is "increasing in double-digit percentages.""
