  •
This article details the findings of a recent study of 6th, 7th and 8th graders in Arizona that found that the students that used a new math and science curriculum called Adaptive Curriculum scored higher on post-tests and assessments than students with the traditional curriculum. The new treatment teaches conceptual understanding of math through content and technology, and emphasizes real-world, informal applications of math and science.

Overcoming the Divide Between Curriculum and Technology Leaders | EdTech Magazine - 3 views

  •
Communication and collaboration between curriculum and technology leaders are necessary to impact teaching and learning. Educators are knowledgeable about research on effective instructional strategies while tech leaders are familiar with educational technology trends and emerging applications and mobile devices. Together, these leaders can develop a common language that aligns evidence-based instructional practices.

Education, psychology and technology: Games lessons | The Economist - 1 views

a school with a curriculum based on videogames

While I applaud the concept of their program, I believe it tips the scale too far in the direction of technology. Unless the students plan to solely work in a digital world the removal of a physical classroom and interaction will greatly affect their social development. For example, physics lab was partially about the smell of the chemicals, the viewing of the wave pools, the teamwork and the mistakes that were real life.

Education, psychology and technology: Games lessons | The Economist - 0 views

  • transferring much of the pedagogic effort from the teachers themselves (who will now act in an advisory role) to a set of video games
  • Periods of maths, science, history and so on are no more. Quest to Learn’s school day will, rather, be divided into four 90-minute blocks devoted to the study of “domains”.
  • in education, as in other fields of activity, it is not enough just to apply new technologies to existing processes—for maximum effect you have to apply them in new and imaginative ways.

Doctor and Patient - Teaching Doctors About Food and Diet - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • For the last 15 years, to help schools with their nutrition curriculum, the University of North Carolina has offered a series of instruction modules free of charge. Initially delivered by CD-ROM and now online, the program, Nutrition in Medicine, is an interactive multimedia series of courses covering topics like the molecular mechanism of cancer nutrition, pediatric obesity, dietary supplements and nutrition in the elderly.
  • More recently, Ms. Adams and her colleagues have begun working on online nutrition education programs geared toward practicing physicians.
  •
I wonder how many medical students and physicians are learning through online information, such as these nutrition modules, to make up for the gaps in current medical education curriculum? These nutrition modules are interactive and let students take electronic notes while reviewing the material.

South Korea Says Good-Bye To Print Textbooks, Plans To Digitize Entire Curriculum By 20... - 2 views

I noticed in the video that despite the kids all having computers, the classroom set-up seems to still be the same as the traditional one, with the teacher in front and the students all sitting at individual desks facing the teacher. Where's the group work/peer-to-peer interaction?

This article is about students running help desks. This is becoming more common, as students are often better versed in technology than many teachers. The article identifies a relevant curriculum and discusses the dynamic shift from students supporting technology to technology supporting students. This also goes along with the Burlington High School help desk link I shared.

Education Week: Picking and Choosing Digital Content - 0 views

  •
This is a great snapshot of the direction that curriculum design can move in with the availability of mobile technology in classrooms. The article discusses the ability to mix and match objectives and choose content that is relevant to the particular students in the class by creating digital content and eBooks. This is great for differentiation. One concern mentioned is the availability of the digital content to all students as not all schools have implemented mobile learning environments, where all students have access.

A Brooklyn High School Takes a New Approach to Vocational Education - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
A look at a Brooklyn public school that offers a six-year high school/college curriculum geared toward jobs in the technology industry. Ironically, it doesn't seem like technology is being used to transform student understanding. And there seems to be a risk that these kids are being trained to do jobs that will be obsolete by the time they finish school.

"The Registry also allows content developers, curriculum coordinators, principals, counselors, and everyone else who supports good teaching in the classroom to benefit from the combined knowledge of the field.""

A four-year university computer science curriculum using only Coursera - 1 views

  •
A step forward in comprehensive online ed, and also an example of "mashing up" existing offerings by a third party. This guy "thought it would be an interesting exercise to see if it was possible to design a reasonable computer science curriculum using just Coursera courses (a MOOC)."
  •
I think that's a really interesting exercise--especially the one comment about "you could take all these in about six months." Thanks for the link!

Reliving History: Virtual Reality in the Classroom -- Campus Technology - 2 views

  •
One of the few uses of advanced technologies in the history curriculum
  •
As delivery of history teaching to students becomes more and more realistic, it is more important than ever to ensure that we have in place a robust and diverse oversight network to ensure that the narrative being suggested is an accurate representation of the time and place, as opposed to a history-as-written-by-the-winners narrative, which is pervasive throughout many textbooks. For many students, this sort of immersion will overwhelm any alternative streams of knowledge coming from Harlem in the 20s, so it is vital that the VR be constructed in a way that captures the context of why it was such a dynamic time in New York. As for the creators of this technology having to turn to the porn industry for technical support, that should not come as a surprise, as many claim that porn has revolutionized, or at least been instrumental in, the emergence of many new industries from VHS to the internet.
