Here is an entertaining talk about how everyday objects can be used for science education. We are all aware / starting to better appreciate that "it definitely ain't about the technology", but what conceptual understanding the technology can effect. Personally, I see two advantages of such low cost technologies: 1. They increase access to interesting learning materials for all - quickly. 2. They can serve as the kernels of ideas for influencing emerging technologies. ( Like in out class discussion : models are still expensive but they can guide / inspie Do share your thoughts.

The Cyberlearning Research Summit will take place in Washington DC, with speakers from industry and academia, who will share visions for the future of learning with emerging technologies. Topics include role of emerging technology in learning, individualized learning, augmented reality, and many others topics covered in T561. HGSE Faculty Dr. Todd Rose will also be a speaker.

Todd Rose presented here last year and it seems highly relevant to our course. In class right now. More on this later.

Innovation Excellence provides a top ten list of emerging educational technologies and how they are being used.

While the technology has summarily 'emerged', Google Earth and a well designed media rich narrative are rethinking lecture dynamics and student participation. Informative video highlights some of the features and offers testimonials about Greenblatt's Humanities 27 being taught at Harvard.

As I chew through the Visions 2020 readings, I can't help my skepticism...and not due to the seamless integration of emerging ed technology. Alas, PEOPLE and the existing power structure of schools (reform) are not guided by a mission to reinvent, but to move the goal posts on ed standards around so as to insulate and protect the paradigm. Tennessee Technology Centers (a "career-training program" that is state funded) is using strictly enforced scheduling to help retain students with 1 in 4 odds of completing their program. The school is taking the opposite approach that most higher education schools take. Instead of having the freedom to create their own schedule, they work with the school to determine a schedule from the beginning which is permanent throughout the duration of their time at the school and is strictly enforced. The school is hoping to increase retention of students in 1 to 2 year programs that have low graduation rates, and produce more graduates in emerging technology fields.

This report highlights key issues to facilitate understanding of how a systemic approach to technology-based school innovations can contribute to quality education for all while promoting a more equal and effective education system. It focuses on the novel concept of systemic innovation, as well as presenting the emerging opportunities to generate innovations that stem from Web 2.0 and the important investments and efforts that have gone into the development and promotion of digital resources. It also shows alternative ways to monitor, assess and scale up technology-based innovations. Some country cases, as well as fresh and alternative research frameworks, are presented.

Secretary of Education Arne Duncan leads a team to State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA) Leadership Summit, "Leveraging Technology for Learning." Th panels focus on making shift to digital textbook, increasing broadband access, STEM, assessment, and improving teacher effectiveness - many of these we discussed in our T561 class.

I worked in Newport News, VA and around that time the current governor was huge with technology initiatives and this school district benefited greatly from this. I see now that they are still being used for projects like this. My concern with Virginia is that they will gladly try technology in schools, but the use of the technology is not always practical. If a person goes on the VDOE website, they will see the state touting their advances in the use of technology. They are calling themselves a leader in online testing, for example, but their 'bragging' points all reflect how the technology has made life easier for all the adults and not necessarily the children. Emerging edtech trends

While this article does not address technology directly, I think this is the type of school community that could so benefit from emerging educational technologies. The traditional school model has been failing them, and they are prime for redesign. I'd be interested to see even how something like ecoMUVE could begin to change the classroom atmosphere.

" It confirms what we discussed in class - technology is an amplifier, "technology amplifies parenting: good parents manage it and make the most of it, but less well supported students sit in front of screens in unsupervised and unproductive activities for far too long. "

Mobile technology brings benefits as well as challenges.

We are in a time convergence where teacher are incorporating technology from their daily lives into the classroom to increase student engagement.

Obama's American job act to spend $944 million for modernization projects for schools in Pennsylvania. Karen Cator, Director of Education Technology for the U.S. Department of Education, says US classrooms are in the midst of transition from print to digital learning environment, that is highly engaging and people focused.

Karen Cator, director of education technology with the U.S. Department of Education touts keystroke-sensitive algorithms are capable of guiding students for learning, accessible to teachers, parents and the students. "Education technology, as in the gaming world, has the ability to assess performance every step of the way, comparing students to classmates across schools, districts, states and the world, with immediate feedback and direction. No final exam necessary."

I am wondering if the current financial state of most schools can support where this technology is going. Are we doing learning a DISSERVICE by expecting them to upgrade their technology infrastructure at the pace that technology changes?

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I think there is this notion that somehow technology is the answer to solving our fundamental problems with education. I love technology as much as anyone else but I despair at schools falling over each other to give their students iPads. Quote from the article - "Think of four or five students struggling with the same math problem. The teacher can pull out her iPad on the fly and sketch a diagram for everyone in the room to see". Does the teacher need an iPad to do that? What is wrong with the blackboard? On the other hand, if you tell me that another student who has found a novel way to solve the problem can project her solution for others to see and learn, I can see some value.
