Why snoring can be dangerous to your heart health| Diseases and Treatment - 0 views

  •
There are multiple causes of snoring and some of them are not detrimental to health. Those can be easily cured just by changing your sleeping postures or curbing on your habit of excessive alcohol consumption. Scientists have now found out after a long-time research that obstructive sleep apnea results from a serious disorder and can up the risk of cardiovascular problem. It could indicate breaking down of cells in your veins. Link between Snoring and Heart Disease However, snoring can be a symptom of serious health issues, including cardiovascular problems. Let us take a quick look at how snoring could be a red flag for your heart health. A recent study by a group of doctors at Columbia University has identified a chain of events that define how the damage is caused in a step-wise manner. Of several problems that could cause heart attack is high blood pressure. If obstructed sleep apnea is not treated properly or in time, it could cause high blood pressure which may result in increased size of the heart, thereby being an alarming signal for strokes and heart attack.

Good cholesterol level:Predictive value varies by race - 0 views

  •
The widely-held concept that levels of "good" cholesterol in the blood can indicate heart disease risk is not equally true for Blacks and whites, and the measure itself may be of less value than previously thought, according to a U.S. study published on Monday (November 21). Various types of cholesterol are thought to have either healthy or unhealthy effects. Low levels of so-called "good" high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol were linked with higher odds for developing cardiac problems in the long-term study - but only in white participants, the study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found. In contradiction to what has generally been assumed, low HDL levels did not confer any higher risk of heart disease in Black people, researchers said. Among white people, however, those with HDL levels below 40 milligrams per deciliter had a 22% higher risk for coronary heart disease compared with those whose HDL levels were higher. High HDL levels (above 60 mg/dL), which are thought to be protective, were not linked with lower coronary heart disease risks in either race, researchers found.

Community Pharmacy : Role in Preventing CVD Deaths - 0 views

  •
Community pharmacies are well placed to play a role in preventing deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD) said Director of NHS Services. The recent analysis by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) revealed that nearly 100,000 more people with cardiovascular disease than expected have died since the start of the pandemic in England. Latest figures show that the number of people waiting for time-sensitive cardiac care was at a record high of nearly 390,000 at the end of April in England. Average ambulance response times for heart attacks and strokes have consistently been above 30 minutes since the beginning of 2022, and in December 2022 they even breached 90 minutes. The target is 18 minutes, though the Government has set a new average target of 30 minutes over 2023/24. Director of NHS Services, Alastair Buxton, said: "It is concerning to hear that there have been tens of thousands of preventable deaths from cardiovascular disease (CVD) since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We share BHF's desire to see more action on preventing the causes of CVD and, subject to appropriate funding being in place, community pharmacy teams are well placed to play a role in this.

Community Pharmacies Vital Role in Early HVD Detection - 0 views

  •
Community pharmacy could play an important role in proactive detection of heart valve disease (HVD), which remains under-recognised and under-detected in England, suggested a new report published by Wilmington Healthcare. Pharmacy bodies, including Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), National Pharmacy Association (NPA) and Community Pharmacy England (CPE), have also endorsed the report, which encourages Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to consider the innovative approach of detecting HVD with the help of community pharmacists. Despite HVD detection being a priority listed in the NHS Long Term Plan, a large number of people with HVD remained undiagnosed and untreated in the country due to lack of awareness of the disease prevalence. In June 2022, a pilot study was launched in Farnborough Primary Care Network (PCN), Hampshire, to evaluate the feasibility of using e-stethoscopes (digital auscultation) to detect this heart condition by a community pharmacist.

AstraZeneca CinCor deal $1.8 bln boosts heart, kidney drugs - 0 views

  •
Anglo-Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca said on Monday (January 9) that it had struck a deal to buy US-based drug developer CinCor Pharma for up to $1.8 billion to increase its stock of heart and kidney drugs. Core to the deal is CinCor's experimental therapy baxdrostat, which is in development to treat conditions including high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease. AstraZeneca aims to combine baxdrostat with its own Farxiga, a diabetes drug whose sales ballooned after it was also shown to benefit patients with heart failure and kidney disease. Farxiga, whose sales jumped by almost 50 per cent during the first nine months of 2022 to reach $3.2 billion, belongs to a highly competitive class of drugs that includes rivals such as Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly's Jardiance. AstraZeneca gets about a third of its revenue from cancer drugs, but its heart, kidney and diabetes medicines are its second most lucrative business by sales, generating roughly $6.9 billion of the drugmaker's total revenue of more than $33 billion in the first three quarters of 2022.

Paper heart valves help scientists study calcifying diseases - 1 views

  •
An experimental device made from layered filter paper is helping Rice University bioengineers study calcifying heart diseases. The filter paper is structured in a way that mimics the layering of aortic heart valves, recreating the means by which cells spread through cardiac tissue in a laboratory setting. It may not look much like a heart valve, but in practice it simulates the proliferation process in the same way.

Blood Test: Importance and What They Tell About Your Health - 0 views

  •
Regular blood testing is a crucial element in making sure you are healthy. Consecutive blood tests allow you to keep track of how your body changes over time while helping you make informed decisions regarding your health. WHAT DO BLOOD TESTS SHOW? Blood tests are designed to help your doctor see how your organs work. Some organ functions that can be detected with blood testing include your kidneys, liver, and thyroid. Your doctor will also use blood tests for finding disease markers and signs of other health conditions, such as HIV, diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer, and anemia. Even if you don't have heart disease, blood tests can tell you if you are at risk of developing this condition. Other blood tests are used to determine if the medications you take work properly and to see how well your blood clots. Keep reading to learn more about the most important blood tests. What Your College Didn't Tell You About Different Types of Obesity! - Pharma Health Online - 0 views

  •
Being overweight can increase your chances of having bad cholesterol in your blood. Due to high cholesterol, a person may suffer from heart related diseases. According to doctor's research, a 10-pound increase in body weight produces 10 milligrams of cholesterol in the body. The body naturally needs cholesterol, and the liver makes the waxy substance to build the body's cells. Cholesterol is very useful for the body to produce vitamin D, which is essential for a healthy immune system. Fat creates triglycerides, which build up in our liver, creating too many triglycerides, which lead to the possibility of high cholesterol. If there is too much LDL (low-density lipoprotein) in the blood, which accumulates fat, this waxy substance can clog your arteries, leading to a heart attack or stroke. Research results show that low-liquid fructose can significantly affect glucose metabolism and lead to metabolic syndrome and fatty liver syndrome. Metabolic syndrome also includes type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. The best treatment for reducing obesity is to use OTC obesity medications, such as Phentermine 37.5-mg, which you can easily buy from Pharma Health online.

NICE recommends new treatment to prevent heart attacks, strokes in people with raised b... - 0 views

  •
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended icosapent ethyl also called Vazkepa manufactured by Amarin for adults who have cardiovascular disease with controlled LDL-C levels taking a statin. It's final draft guidance is expected to be available on the July 20. Nearly half a million people are expected to benefit from the first licensed treatment shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people with controlled low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C - sometimes called "bad" cholesterol) who are taking a statin and who have raised levels of triglycerides. NICE said: "Clinical trial evidence suggests that for people with raised triglycerides who have LDL-C levels controlled by statins, and who have cardiovascular disease, icosapent ethyl reduces their risk of cardiovascular events by over a quarter compared with placebo. Helen Knight, interim director of medicines evaluation at NICE, said: "Icosapent ethyl is the first licensed treatment of its kind for people who are at risk of heart attacks and strokes despite well controlled LDL cholesterol because they have raised blood fats. And although lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, can help to reduce their risk, these may not work for everyone.
