As the healthcare industry prepares for the 2015 U.S. Governmental EHR/EMR Compliancy, long-term care communities are finding it necessary to upgrade or add an enterprise wireless network to their facilities to assist in support this change. Sorting through the technologies available and understanding the pros and cons of each can be confusing, especially when adapting to several-decades-old buildings that were not designed for wireless systems.

Status Solutions announced that its SARA (Situational Awareness and Response Assistant) emergency alert system has been deployed at Park Place of Elmhurst near Chicago with the help of ProviNET Solutions. Electronic Medical Records: ProviNET is about halfway through a three-year process to implement an EMR from HealthMEDX to support physician order entry, nurse notes, documentation by certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and e-prescribing. On the long-term care side, the organization is implementing one EMR component at a time and expects to implement the last component-e-prescribing-in about a year, once the new standards from the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs can be tested. On the home and community-based service side, ProviNET has completed its EMR implementation.

An electronic medical record is now being developed, based on a core product by HealthMEDX. "We are about 50 percent through [the process] with our parent company," says Goodfriend. "A smaller stand-alone community could do it in a year. For a bigger company like us, we are moving slow because we have so many manual processes and custom forms, plus each community has different relationships with hospitals, etc.
