Science of Reliability for Patient Care - 0 views

  •
Overview:   Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) defines reliability as "failure-free performance over time2". This is simple enough to be understood by anyone. The aim is to have no failures over an extended time period in spite of variability in the patient environment. spite of variability in the patient environment.  This is in line with the technical definition of reliability as the probability of successful performance of intended functions for a specified length of time under a specified user (patient) environment. In a system where the severity of consequences is high, such as in hospitals, the goal is to achieve reliability as close to 100% as possible. This is called failure-free performance. Some hospitals have achieved this goal for specific medical procedures for several quarters. Can they extend this performance over years instead of quarters? That is the challenge we need to face and find elegant solutions zero mistakes or find a way to protect patients if a mistake cannot be prevented.  Why should you Attend: The failures of the U.S. healthcare system are enormous considering the severity of failures. As much as 400,000 patients die each year from hospital mistakes. Another 2.1 are harmed from nosocomial infections (infections acquired during hospital stay). The cost is in billions. Discussions with doctors show that there is reluctance to apply reliability principles to healthcare systems because the variability in healthcare is enormous compared to the aviation and industrial fields. Each customer (patient) is different and each illness is unique in its own way. Then there are interconnecting systems such as cardiology, gynecology, gastroenterology, emergency medicine, oncology, and patient data from various doctors, pagers, computers, vendor software, and intensive care, each operating independently most of the time. But good approaches to improving the system reliability have been tried and tested in many industries. There is a

Clinical information: Clinical informatics is the new exciting kid on the block. With the right mix of aptitude and attitude, professionals can look forward to many opportunities and challenges in the field. An understanding of the coining of the term "clinical informatics" gives an idea of what it is. Clinical informatics is a combination of two words, "clinical" and "informatics". Together, these relate to the knowledge of how information technology works in the healthcare sector. It is very important for clinicians to understand the functioning of IT into its domain, because with the advent of IT; there has been a major need to integrate clinical practices with it. A clinician who understands the way IT impacts the workings on in her industry is a better equipped professional when it comes to handling IT-related issues in the clinical setting. A clinical informatics professional should have a clear idea of the following approaches to IT: Analysis Design Implementation Assessment of information and communication that enhance the quality of clinical informatics Single approach to multiple health areas: One important element that needs to be understood about clinical informatics is that given the scope and breadth of the area of clinical informatics; professionals from any discipline of health -be it pathology, pharmacy, dentistry, radiology, dermatology, etc. -apply the same principles of clinical informatics to optimize the use of IT in healthcare. This requires constant coordination and cooperation with professionals and practitioners of all these areas. Clinical informatics is thus an area which is interspersed with all these other specializations and can be used and applied in any of these areas. What should a clinical informatics professional ensure? What are the various Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Treatment Devices available... - 0 views

  •
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition that is characterized by the regurgitation of stomach contents into the throat. GERD is also known as acid reflux disease and it occurs in people of all ages. In milder cases, GERD can be effectively treated with simple pharmacological therapies or by altering a patient's diet. In more severe cases, esophageal surgery might be necessary to remove the troublesome esophageal sphincter and/or improve a patient's general physical condition. GERD can develop when the lower esophageal valve relaxes or becomes weakened. The diagnosis of GERD and gastroesophageal reflux disease can be done by examining the medical history and symptoms. Although acid-reflux disease typically affects the upper body, some of its symptoms can extend down the esophageal tract, making GERD particularly troubling for people who sit or stand for long periods of time. This problem has given rise to a variety of different approaches to treatment, including invasive, surgical treatments, non-surgical treatments and more novel, non-invasive therapeutic approaches. The latest treatment option on the table involves using pharmaceuticals, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), to help reduce the effects of GERD. There are a number of advantages to this strategy. For starters, SSRIs are believed to have numerous side effects that tend to make them less attractive to certain groups of patients. Electrical stimulation (ESD) is another common form Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Treatment Devices. This technique involves the use of electrodes attached to the esophageal wall to generate a varying amount of electrical current. Antirheumatic drugs, which often cause symptoms similar to those of severe heart disease, are sometimes added to the mixture. A major disadvantage of using plicator devices with ESD is that the procedure can only be performed on an outpatient basis, requiring a patient to remain in the hospital for a fe

Sterilization Equipment and Disinfectants Gaining Significant Traction Due to Ongoing C... - 0 views

  •
The process of sterilization and disinfection has always been crucial in maintaining optimum hygiene in any given setting. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the importance of these processes. Sterilization refers to any process that removes, eradicates, or kills all forms of life particularly, fungi, bacteria, viruses, spores, etc. Sterilization equipment and disinfectants are crucial in modern medical care as patients come in contact with syringes, surgical tools, and bandages all time. These medical devices eliminate any foreign particles, pus, blood, and dirt left behind that could create complications for the next patient requiring surgery. Besides, it decreases bioburden and prevents corrosion of expensive and highly precise tools. There are different sterilization processes performed including steam sterilizing, flash sterilizing, low-temperature sterilizing, hydrogen peroxide gas plasma, ethylene oxide gas sterilization, peracetic acid sterilization, etc. Many regulatory authorities have issued guidelines on how to sterilize medical equipment. The hospitals refer to it as a germ warfare strategy and it is done in a specific order. The first step is cleaning followed by disinfection which involves using liquid chemicals to kill non-spore-forming bacteria. The final step is sterilizing where several methods are employed to kill disease-causing microorganisms and also eradicate transmissible agents such as spores and bacteria. In hospitals, it has become extremely crucial to avoid overcrowding in emergency departments also inefficient scheduling in surgical departments. Patient flow management solutions offer certain strategies to handle and improve patient flow. One of the first things that need to be done is to establish an emergency department fast-track process, which will be integrated with tests, triage, and treatment protocols. This will streamline patient handoffs. There should be a selective surgical schedule to help relieve strain on post-operative departments.
