Workplace Safety Regulations - 0 views

  •
Workplace Safety Regulations : Workplace safety is a matter of grave importance to any organization. Ensuring the safety of workers is a primary goal of most countries, no matter which kind of political system or setup they have. This is because almost no workplace is free from some or another kind of hazard. These workplaces could be as varied as hospitals, construction sites, engineering plants or agriculture and many more. Governments the world over consider it their duty to provide a safe workplace. Workplace safety can concern any hazard that can happen to either the physical or emotional wellbeing of a worker. National and global workplace safety regulations : Workplace safety regulations are legally stipulated measures that governments require organizations in both the private and public sector to implement in order to ensure safety at the workplace. Almost all countries have their own set of workplace safety regulations. These regulations work in tandem with a few global management systems with the aim of enhancing safety standards at the workplace. A notable global organization that is at the forefront of legislating workplace safety regulations is the International Labor Organization (ILO). These ILO-mandated legislations are meant to supplement the national workplace safety regulations that most countries have. This is done in the belief that many a time, these individual legislations may not be sufficient in themselves. Workplace safety regulations in the US : Like most other countries, the US too has its own set of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards. Owing their origins to the Richard Nixon era in late 1970; workplace safety regulations in the US concretized under what is collectively called the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The major feature of OSHA is that apart from promulgating workplace safety regulations across nearly all conceivable sectors and types of industries; OSHA also has a provision for whistleblow

The HIPAA/HITECH Security Audit - 0 views

  •
The federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was legislated in 1996 with the primary aim of ensuring that employees who are in the process of changing or leaving their jobs do not lose their health insurance benefits. Additionally, HIPAA sought to bring down health care fraud and abuse by mandating pan-industry standards for the protection of health care information and automated billing and other related processes, and for ensuring the security of Protected Health Information (PHI). What is a HIPAA Security Audit? A HIPAA Security Audit is a program under the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Audit Program of the Office of Civil Rights (OCR). A HIPAA Security Audit is carried out to make sure that the policies, processes and controls on the part of Covered Entities comply with the provisions of the HITECH Act of 2009. Adherence to the requirements laid out by HITECH is mandatory. Given the high degree of continued use of new technologies that go into and will continue to go into electronic records of patients and the criticality of the data contained in them; the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recognizes that there could be chances of data breach of Protected Health Information. It is to prevent the occurrence of these breaches that a HIPAA Security Audit is mandated by the HITECH Act. Reporting of data breaches is mandatory The foremost highlight of the HITECH Act is the requirement that Entities covered by HIPAA report data breaches that affect 500 or more employees to the HHS. The OCR lays out an Audit Protocol, with whose policies, protocols and processes a facility has to comply if it is said to be compliant with the HIPAA Security Audit. Why is it necessary to carry out a HIPAA/HITECH Security Audit? Compliance with HIPAA Security Audit is necessary to demonstrate that a practice or business is well protected. The most important reason for which such entities need to be HIPAA/HITECH Security

Key Factors to Write an Effective Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Work I... - 0 views

Course "Key Factors to Write an Effective Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Work Instructions (WIs)" has been pre-approved by RAPS as eligible for up to 12 credits towards a participant's RAC recertification upon full completion. Overview: Writing SOPs or procedural documents can be challenging at times. However, writing SOPs is overall a straightforward process. However, enforcing what you already created and implemented in the pipeline is another story. The term SOP is very obvious. We have seen "clearly written description of how specific tasks are to be done." Another satisfactory definition would be "detailed written instructions that achieve the uniformity of the performance of a specific function." Is the firm doing what the regulations specify? Is the firm doing what their procedures specify? If you are medical device or a pharmaceutical manufacturer, these definitions come as no surprise because when it comes to FDA regulations and guidance documents "establish" means to define, to document (in writing or electronically) and to implement. The goal and emphasis with FDA is simple. Proof of "Establish" is the foundation. Is the firm doing what the regulations specify? Is the firm doing what their procedures specify? Are the procedures being followed and enforced by company personnel? SOPs are needed in regulated industries to give step-by-step instructions for performing a particular job or task. This session will provide a step-by-step overview and a snapshot of the procedure description, the process and format. The subject matter of a SOP may range from how to operate a piece of machinery to how to log into a particular software program. SOPs ensure consistency and reliability because they require training of all affected parties. This session will address recent enforcement actions for SOP related violations but no surprise. Most of our enforcement actions are documentation related, i.e., SOP or other procedural documents. We will review examples from

Understanding Medical Identity Theft and ways of preventing it - 0 views

  •
Understanding Medical Identity Theft and ways of preventing it Medical Identity Theft is a common phenomenon in today's situation, where most health records are digitized. Although a lot of precaution goes into the security and protection of these records, Medical Identity Theft is a cause for worry. medicalIdentityTheft The most common types of data that are stolen are Social Security Number (SSN), name and the Medicare number, the most potent tools with which to impersonate and manipulate data. Why do crooks steal medical data? Medical Identity Theft happens mainly because hackers and mischief-makers access protected data to lay hands on confidential information about patients, using which they obtain medical care on behalf of the person/s whose records they steal or purchase expensive medicines. In many cases, a Medical Identity Theft is detected only after one gets a bill for a purchase or service that was never made. medicalIdentityTheft Medical Identity Theft is also committed to buy drugs and obtain fake bills that are then submitted to Medicare in the name of the original holder of the medical record. These acts can significantly dent a person's credit rating. More importantly, when wrong information or fictitious diagnosis is made into the medical record, it can lead to dangerous consequences. Ways of protection of medical data The Office of the Inspector General (OIG), which comes under Health and Human Services (HHS), realizing the gravity of the problem of Medical Identity Theft, has formulated the "3D" approach to protect medical data and prevent Medical Identity Theft. These are: Deter: One of the ways of protecting medical data is to prevent Medical Identity Theft. Users should be cautious about parting with information to anyone who claims, over phone, to have a new scheme whose enrolment requires the Social Security Number. Detect:Many fraudsters accost people at accessible public places to announce supposedly "new" medical schemes. Governm

It is important to ensure food safety in hospitals - 0 views

  •
It is important to ensure food safety in hospitals Hospitals being what they are - where patients of almost all kinds visit or stay - are very potent sources of infection. Infection can arise from any part of the hospital. They can spread from patients to patients, from caregivers to patients, from patients to caregivers, from patients to support or administrative staff and vice versa, and so on. An often overlooked source of infection and contamination is the food that comes into hospitals. Food safety in hospitals is a very important element of hygiene First, an understanding of food safety in the context of hospitals is necessary. Food safety in hospitals is described as the scientific way by which food is prepared, handled and stored in hospital settings. Any food that is prepared in hospital kitchens are, like food prepared in other places such as canteens, hotels and restaurants and even homes, sourced from outside. This food comes from suppliers whose hygiene has to be ensured. Food hazards can come in many forms, including, but not limited to: Biological Chemical Physical Allergenic Hazards an Several other contributing factors It is in the process of procuring materials for food and preparing it in hospital kitchens that a major part of food safety in hospitals is compromised. There has to be a thorough mechanism to ensure that all these producers and suppliers follow regulatory requirements in ensuring that the food they produce and supply to hospitals is clean and safe. Literally thousands of patients get infected from over 250 kinds of bacteria, parasites and viruses when they consume food prepared in hospitals. Findings of a recent study It is pertinent to recall the findings of study done in May 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland. It carried out an examination of chicken supplied to and prepared in a hospital in this city. An astounding four fifths of these chickens were known to have been infected with E.coli, leading to its possible transmission to pati

HIPAA Breach Notification Rules and its new version - 0 views

  •
HIPAA Breach Notification Rules and its new version : Let us begin at the beginning: What is breach notification? The term is pretty simple to understand. It means notifying the authorities whenever there is a breach of Protected Health Information (PHI). Covered Entities (CE's) and Business Associates (BA's), who are closely associated with PHI, and individuals whose PHI data are breached, are required to bring such data breaches to the notice of the authorities, whenever there is one. A breach notification is a mechanism that is aimed at ensuring that BA's and CE's meet requirements in the HITECH Act in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). To whom should the affected individuals and CE's and BA's complain? Whenever there is a breach of PHI by a CE or a BA, or if there is violation of the Privacy, Security, or Breach Notification Rules, the affected individual can complain to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR), which will initiate investigation into these complaints. Whenever a CE or a BA detects a breach, it can complain to the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). In addition, the HIPAA breach notification rules have clear guidelines on how to report breaches in the following classifications: HIPAA's definition of a breach A breach of PHI is said to have taken place when any unpermitted use or disclosure that compromises the security of the data in the PHI takes place. Any such action, resulting in the breach of any kind of data contained in a PHI, big or small, is considered a breach, unless the CE or BA can explain that the data that got breached into was not serious enough, from its risk assessment point of view, to warrant immediate intervention. The new HIPAA breach notification rules The HHS embarked on a new HIPAA breach notification program, the HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Audit Program, with which it seeks to bring a few changes into the existing HIPAA breach notification rules. Best Wheelchair For Heavy Person - 0 views

  •
People who are very large or heavy may have difficulty using regular chairs. In some cases, they are simply too wide to comfortably fit in an average-sized chair, and in other cases their weight may damage or break the chair entirely. This is not only humiliating to the person who sits in the chair, but could result in injury if the chair collapses. To avoid such an unfortunate occurrence as well as potential litigation, it is important to purchase heavy duty chairs that can accommodate larger family members, employees, and customers. Heavy duty wheelchairs can also be made for specific purposes. An off-road wheelchair, for example, is a heavy duty wheelchair designed for individuals who intend on spending a lot of time on rugged terrain. The most common type of heavy duty wheelchair is a bariatric wheelchair, which is designed to allow larger individuals adequate mobility. For this matter, heavy duty wheelchairs typically have larger seats than conventional wheelchairs. The frames of these wheelchairs can be made from several different reinforced metals, although a titanium wheelchair is often the most popular choice. The wheels themselves are made of thicker rubber than normal, preventing any possible failure due to the greater amount of weight supported. Most makes of heavy duty wheelchairs fold like regular wheelchairs, making storage relatively easy despite the wheelchair's increased size. For the user's convenience, a heavy duty wheelchair can either be manually-operated or motorized, each with its own pros and cons. A manual Heavy Duty Wheelchair gives full control of motion to the user, but the added weight from the reinforcements makes pushing or propelling the wheelchair much harder than normal. A motorized heavy duty wheelchair offers a solution to this dilemma, but is often more expensive and harder to maintain than a manual wheelchair. Some designs offer a combination of both, with a small motor assisting those pushing the wheelchair. The proper c

Lightweight Wheelchair With Padded Armrests - 0 views

Transport wheelchairs or companion chairs are companion wheelchairs where the purpose is for a companion to push the user. Most of our transporters have swing-away leg rests, fixed armrests, and side panels. Instead of the usual 'large back - small front' wheels typical of most wheelchairs, light travel chairs have four small wheels providing much easier maneuverability of the chair. This type of lightweight wheelchair is often referred to as a "transfer chair" and is typically used for shorter trips. Since it's geared towards storability and portability, it features four smaller wheels and dispenses with the larger, rear-mounted wheels that characterize standard wheelchairs. Transport wheelchairs construction ensures that it's always foldable and portable wheelchair, but does so at the expense of self-propulsion. Instead, a transport chair is built so that a caregiver can easily push the user. Transport Wheelchair is constructed of tough and light aluminum. Myelofibrosis Treatment includes medications and surgery. There are drugs and medicines which are used to cure myelofibrosis. Myelofibrosis is a muscle disease and various types of myelofibrosis treatment are available in the market to cure this condition. The muscle disease is caused due to myelodysplasia, a genetically determined trait that prevents the muscle from growing properly. Myelofibrosis is also known as spider veins, lying in regions close to the skin, like the armpits, groin, elbows, and knees. Myelofibrosis is the most common type of connective tissue disease. These medicines are generally used to control and stop the progress of the disease, after which, they suppress the activity of the immune system. Various types of steroids are used as medicines for myelofibrosis, to control the activity of the immune system and thereby stop the disease in its tracks. One of the most common drugs for myelofibrosis treatment is prednisone, which is generally used along with steroids. However, to treat spider veins and not myelofibrosis, a compound called Finasteride is used. The most important part of myelofibrosis treatment is a regular check-up, as early as 18 months of the disease a doctor can monitor the progress of the disease. Myelofibrosis treatment also includes physical therapy and other treatments to improve the symptoms of myelofibrosis. The main driving factor influencing the growth of the myelofibrosis treatment market is the increasing prevalence of myelofibrosis in emerging economies. For instance, according to Gleneagles Global Hospitals, the yearly incidence rate of myelofibrosis in India is 0.3 to 1.5 cases per 100,000 individuals. Most of the times these cases goes unnoticed since it is sometimes asymptomatic or less severe. Moreover, the market is estimated to grow owing to a large number of R&D investments, a large cluster of patients suffering from myelofibrosis, and better reimbursement policies. What is Corporate Governance? | Robert Mariott | LinkedIn - 0 views

  •
What is Corporate Governance? In a broad sense, corporate governance can be defined as a set of processes by which corporations are run and administered. These are a collective function of the critical, core decision makers in the organization, such as Directors, CEO, managers, investors, stakeholders, shareholders, creditors, auditors and others. Corporate Governance sets out the methods and rules for making rules that govern corporate entities. Although business is the main concern and task of an organization, Corporate Governance occupies as important a position, because while the financial aspect of a business is all about profits, the Corporate Governance aspect is primarily about its integrity, values and reputation. Corporate Governance takes into consideration all aspects of the governance of the organization from critical standpoints such as ethics, regulatory aspects, policies and mission, etc. History of the growth of Corporate Governance Although Corporate Governance has been around for a number of decades in some or another form, it came to acquire proper shape and direction of late, following the collapse of very big multinationals such as Enron, WorldCom and others. It was felt that their shady dealings, which led to huge losses for their stakeholders and eventually to the businesses collapse, could have been averted if a proper regulatory framework of Corporate Governance were in place. This is the feeling that led to the passing of the Sarbanes Oxley Act, or SOX in the early 2000's. One of the core principles enunciated in SOX related to Corporate Governance. Elements of Corporate Governance As a result of the SOX Act and other legislations in other developed countries, such as the Cadbury Report of the UK and other legislations in the OECD nations; Corporate Governance is now administered through a well-defined set of principles.
