Important point: there's a behavioral component to health literacy
  • Health literacy has many definitions. Healthy People 2010 has defined health literacy as "the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions" (Ratzan & Parker, 2000).

My Family Health Portrait - Welcome - 0 views

A tool to help individuals track their family health information. 1) What I like about this site: There's helpful how-to information in the FAQ and the site does a gd job of explaining why a family health history record can be important. There's also a support telephone line that provides assistance to people who are struggling. The site includes a Spanish and Portuguese language version. 2) What might be improved: some of the "Get Help" info is actually in the FAQ (i.e., the info about the help line).

Self Care & Self Management Course - Training, Skills, Tools, Advice & Networks - 1 views

  • Self care is about individuals taking responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. Self management is about individuals making the most of their lives and coping with difficulties and making the most of what they have. It includes managing and minimising the way conditions limit individuals’ lives as well as what they can do to feel happy and fulfilled to make the most of their lives despite the condition" Skills for Health (2008)
  • Healthcare professionals can also provide support and resources to assist individuals in managing these activities. Example include: Patient education, self care skills training, health and social care information, care plan approach, self diagnostic tools, self monitoring devices, peer support networks and home adaptations.
