So - who needs stretching? Everyone! However, the type of stretch you select depends on where you are in your workout and what you are trying to achieve. Stretch as much as you need to ensure your body functions as it should but don't be one of those people who have amazing flexibility but also spend (seemingly) hours doing even more stretching. Stretching burns very few calories and doesn't do that much for your strength so do the minimum amount necessary to get the results you need and then spend the rest of your valuable workout time on your cardio, core and strength training.
Sometimes, exercise can be a hard sell. I mean many people would rather spend their hard-earned leisure time sitting on the sofa watching TV than sweating like crazy in the gym.
As a fitness trainer, I am often asked for my opinion on which exercises are best; best for cardio, best for fat loss, best for endurance, best for fitness...In many cases, my answer is the same: jumping rope!
So, winter is (hopefully) in retreat and, now the good weather is coming, I'm really looking forward to getting out of the gym and working out outdoors. I've been a personal trainer for over fifteen years and as much as I love the gym, I know that training outdoors offers a host of additional benefits. So, be like me and my clients and swap the gym for the great outdoors - I promise you'll love it!
Many personal trainers may have turned their backs on bodyweight exercises but I for one have not. I believe that, sometimes, the old ways are the best and certainly warrant inclusion in a program that uses other training methods. So, until you can do 50 push-ups, 15 pull-ups and 10 one-legged squats, don't go saying that bodyweight exercises are "just for beginners" - it's really just not true!
