The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has launched new guidance to highlight the latest safety advice on the steps to take during
anaphylaxis.
On the start of World Allergy Week (19 June), an annual initiative led by the World Allergy Organization, aiming to raise awareness of allergies, their management
and prevention, the MHRA has collaborated with allergy awareness advocates to share an easy step-by-step infographic guide and video outlining the latest advice
from the CHM's working group on the safe and effective use of AAIs.
Steve Barclay, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care said: "A severe allergic reaction can be life-threatening. One in five people in the UK suffer with at
least one allergy, so it's vital people are equipped with the knowledge to keep themselves safe.
Adrenaline auto-injectors - also known as AAIs or by their brand names such as EpiPen - are highly effective and convenient for the immediate treatment of
anaphylaxis. If you have been prescribed one, please carry it with you at all times and make sure you are up to date on the latest safety guidance - it could
save your life."
A community pharmacist was applauded for his 'quick-thinking' action in treating a Co Down woman with a fatal bee sting.
Joan Johnson, from Moira, was stung on her scalp in her home garden. After the bite, she noticed allergic reactions on her neck and ears with severe itching
and redness.
However, she was advised to visit her local pharmacy by the GP where the pharmacist, Stephen Joyce, quickly administered life-saving antihistamine and an
adrenaline injection while an ambulance was called.
Joan hailed the 'treatment' and the 'professionalism' of the whole team for saving her life.
"What was just a simple bee-sting, quickly became something very serious. On arrival at the pharmacy on the advice from my GP, I was dealt with very promptly
and Stephen was summoned and immediately took control of the situation.
"I was given an urgent antihistamine, but quickly started feeling lightheaded and faint. The pharmacy team assisted me to a chair and called an
ambulance," she said.
Benefits of Echinacea for Health and Wellness
The Echinacea plant is still in benefit today as a dietary supplement. It has nine species, but only two of them, Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia are generally used in supplements. Other supplements are in pill form, teas, juices, and creams. It possesses many compounds that may benefit your health.
1/10_ It treat infections and wounds
Echinacea has been used for centuries to treat infections and wounds. In fact, the Native Americans used echinacea to treat their cuts, burns, bruises, and insect bites. They'd apply the fresh plant directly onto their skin to heal those wounds faster than they would have otherwise. It has also been shown in multiple studies to be effective in treating colds and other infections. This benefit is believed to be due to its immune-boosting properties that help strengthen your body's defenses against bacteria.
ECZEMA
People with eczema suffer from an inflammation of the skin; a cream including echinacea extract may benefit. Early research suggests that daily topical application of echinacea cream helped alleviate eczema-related irritation. It also helped create the protective outer layer of skin.
Be aware of probable allergic reactions, as people with eczema generally have allergies and asthma.
2/10_Antioxidant powerhouse
Antioxidants are substances that protect you from disease by neutralizing or eliminating the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions in your body that have an unpaired electron and can cause oxidative stress in your cells. Echinacea is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight the free radicals that cause damage to cells and tissues. Free radicals may contribute to cancer development, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer's disease, and many other chronic diseases.
Echinacea has been shown in studies to positively impact the immune system by boosting its response against infection-causing
The Medicine and Healthcare Product Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recalled all pholcodine-containing medicines from the UK pharmacy due to concerns of its
potential to cause a severe allergic reaction in some people having general anaesthesia for surgery.
The decision was made following the conclusion of a review of post-marketing safety data by the MHRA. The Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) has considered the
evidence of an increased risk of the very rare event of anaphylaxis when exposed to neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA) and advised that pholcodine-containing
medicines should be withdrawn.
MHRA has advised pharmacists to consider recommending appropriate treatment alternatives for patients who present with a new dry cough or who are currently taking
pholcodine.
Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) President Professor Claire Anderson said: "If you are taking a cough medicine (including tablets and syrups), check the packaging,
label or Patient Information Leaflet to see if pholcodine is a listed ingredient - if it is, and you have any questions, you can talk to your pharmacist who can
suggest a different medicine suitable for you.

Insect bites and stings typically increase in the summer in England. This year, however, there's been an earlier-than-usual spike in the number of people
seeking NHS advice on the condition.
According to the NHS England, visits to its insect bites and stings web page have nearly tripled in the last three weeks compared to the same period last year,
peaking at an average of one visit every 22 seconds in the past week.
Over the span of 21 days, a total of 68,986 visited the page, marking a significant 162 per cent increase compared to the 26,368 visits recorded in the first three
weeks of May 2023.
Although insect bites or stings are usually not serious and people tend to get better after a few days, the health service has cautioned that they can lead to
infection or severe allergic reactions.
People are encouraged to refer to the NHS website for advice or visit their local pharmacy to get advice and treatment for common health conditions, including
infected insect bites.
