AI algo detects brain defects treat hard-to-spot epilepsy - 0 views

  •
A University College London team of researchers has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) programme that can identify minute brain anomalies that lead to epileptic seizures. The algorithm, used in the Multicentre Epilepsy Lesion Detection project (MELD) and which reports locations of abnormalities in cases of drug-resistant focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) - a major cause of epilepsy - was developed by a multinational team who used more than 1,000 patient MRI scans from 22 international epilepsy centres. Brain regions known as FCDs have evolved improperly and frequently lead to drug-resistant epilepsy. Surgery is usually used to treat it, however, finding the lesions on an MRI is a constant problem for doctors because MRI scans for FCDs can appear normal. The scientists employed about 300,000 places throughout the brain to quantify cortical properties from the MRI scans, such as how thick or folded the cortex/brain surface was.

New Alopecia Treatment - Litfulo: A Hopeful Solution - 0 views

  •
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has authorised a new drug today (1 November) to treat severe alopecia areata. Litfulo is the new hard capsule medicine with a recommended dosage of just 50 mg per day. It contains an active ingredient, ritlecitinib, an enzyme inhibitor treatment for patients over 12 years. Ritlecitinib works by reducing the activity of enzymes in the body called JAK3 and TEC kinases that cause hair follicle inflammation. This reduction in inflammation leads to hair regrowth in patients with alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease, where the body's own immune system attacks hair follicles leading to hair loss on the scalp and other parts of the body.

Omicron subvariants spread:Risk of Covid deaths rising-ECDC - 0 views

  •
Two new subvariants of Omicron - BA.4 and BA.5 - are spreading much faster than other corovanirus variants in Europe, which could lead to more hospitalisations and deaths as they become dominant, the EU's disease prevention agency said on Monday (June 13). Most EU countries have so far detected low rates of the two subgroups. But in countries where the proportion has risen - such as Portugal, where BA.5 accounted for 87 per cent of cases by May 30 - there have been surges in overall cases, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The two sublineages were added to the World Health Organization's monitoring list in March and have also been designated as variants of concern by the ECDC. Variants BA.4 and BA.5 do not appear to carry a higher risk of severe disease than other forms of Omicron. But an increase in case numbers from higher transmission rates risks leading to an increase in hospitalisations and deaths, the agency said. "The growth advantage reported for BA.4 and BA.5 suggest that these variants will become dominant," ECDC said in a statement on its website.

DE Group:Independent pharma wholesaler into administration - 0 views

  •
DE Group, one of the UK's leading independent pharmaceutical wholesalers, has gone into administration. Pharmacy Business has learnt that the group was put into administration on Monday (May 9), putting hundreds of jobs at risk and stoking fears of a "sudden shock" to pharmaceutical supply chain. A community pharmacy contractor who has done business with the wholesaler for over 20 years told Pharmacy Business: "I fear for the worst. I don't think there will be enough supply of medicines to cope up with a surge at such a short notice." Bharat Shah, founder and CEO of Sigma Pharmaceuticals, another leading short-line wholesaler, said the news will send shock-waves and have "a massive impact on the market" because DE Group enjoyed a "substantial coverage and market share" in the independent pharmacy sector. "It won't be easy for anyone to take on the extra volume as it could jeopardise their own business," he said, adding that Sigma was actively looking into expanding its own operations in the foreseeable future.

An old proverb that comes to mind in the pursuit of the twin objectives of serenity and health is this: the mind and the body are inexorably intertwined. This essential, often overlooked, connection is at the heart of our ability to manage stress and foster a sense of well-being. But how does one truly achieve relaxation, and how does it translate to a healthier way of living? From ancient practices to modern breakthroughs, the path to stress relief and overall health is illuminated by a multifaceted approach that combines mindfulness, diet, exercise, and even the judicious use of calming products. The nexus between stress relief and well-being is rich and layered. By exploring various strategies, we can uncover the tapestry of tranquility that ultimately leads to a richer, more vital life. Relaxation Leads to a Healthier Mind and Body Relaxation is not just a warm bath or an hour of Netflix; it is the conscious unclenching of the mind and the body's release of tension. It's a critical ingredient in the complex recipe for overall health and plays a significant role in the functioning of the immune system, the maintenance of a healthy heart, and the regulation of moods. To relax, people take wellness CBD gummies that offer a natural, convenient route to unwind without the psychedelic effects often associated with the substance. Relaxation techniques also encompass meditation, deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery. Each method has its loyal practitioners, but the central tenet remains the same - in relaxation lies a wellspring of health.
