Title: Genes vs. Environment Author: University of Edinburgh Date Published: May 16, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article provides information on over 800 sets of experiments that were done to prove how genes played a more important role in development than the environment. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me want to conduct my own research or do my own study on twins who were separated at birth to see how identical their characteristics were after five or ten years of being apart. That would help me see for myself if genetics really do have a greater inpact than environment does on development. Credibility of Source: This source is credible because the information was derived from universities, journals, and other research organizations and they have references to all the information they used.

Brent Date Published:April 1, 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: Contains information on teratogens from various kinds to what malformations they can cause in the body. This article starts off by describing the criteria to be classified as a teratogen. There are three categories of congenital malformations: unknown, genetic, and environmental. The severity of effects of teratogen are determined by time of exposure and amount of exposure or threshold dose. How This Influenced My Thinking: There are specific criteria in order to be classified as caused by teratogen. Credibility of Source: The source is highly credible. It comes from the Journal of American Academy of Pediatrics.

Title: Height Hopes A new study identifies potential height genes Author: No authors are listed Date Published: also unlisted, but it was written sometime after 2007 because that was the date of one the references used in the article. Why Relevant: The article talks about how height is based on your genes as well as you your environment. It mentions twin studies as well as talking about how scientists are trying to determine which genes are responsible for determining height. How This Influenced My Thinking: The article had some great information about twin studies and how they have been used to look at how much your height is a genetic factor. Credibility of Source: Decent, The website is put out through a museum that is associated with the University of Stanford. But since there isn't a date, or author it lowers the credibility of the source.

Title: The Latest Science of Nature Versus Nurture Author: Stefan Molyneux Date Published: May 25, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This video is breaks down all factors from genetics to environmental influences that contribute to human development. The video shows the importance of prenatal care to environmental effects on individuals after they have been born. How This Influenced My Thinking: Reviewing this video has really made me think on which plays a bigger role on a person's development. I have come to the conclusion that genetics play the leading role but not by much. The human fetal stage is very fragile and will induce any stress that it has encountered, from emotional stress, to chemical through the actions of the mother. Credibility of Source: Stefan Molyneux who is a radio broadcaster, is really a collector of information rather than a scholarly researcher, who merely reposts other's findings from educated researchers.

How This Influenced My Thinking: Listening to real people tell their story on being twins and a part of a study of how nature vs. nurture has impacted them individually has contributed greatly to my understanding.

Author:Annie Paul Date Published:7/29/2011 Why Relevant and Summary:It tells you all about how in the second trimester an infant can hear and recognize sounds. How This Influenced My Thinking:It has made me more aware of how learning is very important even before birth. Credibility of Source:High

Title: Prenatal Development Author: Richard Parncutt Date Published: 2006 Why Relevant and Summary: This resource discusses prenatal development with a focus on the fetal sound environment. This is relevant because it directly discusses prenatal development and care. It also touches upon the emotional and physiological aspects of communication with a developing baby by using sound. How This Influenced My Thinking: I had no idea how much of an influence sounds had on a developing baby, and how early the influence begins. Credibility of Source: Excellent. Author is a professor who specializes in psychology of music.

Title: Prenatal Care Fact Sheet Author:reviewed by John W. Schmitt, M.D Date Published:March 6, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This article explains what prenatal care is, what steps should be taken to have a healthy baby, and a list of Do's and Dont's. it also gives information on prenatal checkups for women and what to expect. This is relevant because it explains prenatal care. How this Influenced my thinking: It coincided with what i already knew about prenatal care. i learned however that women should take folic acid even if unsure if they are pregnant, or if they are planning on getting pregnant Credibility of Source:part of U.S. department of health, women's health department.

Schmitt Date Published: March 6, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: It is relevant because it tals about how a woman can take care of herself during and after pregnancy. It gives you tips and advice for prenatal development. It also gives you defenitions and good facts. How This Influenced My Thinking: This allowed me to see more of the preganancy side than anything else. I managed to read through it and find out that there are a lot of things you need to do while pregnant. Credibility: It came from Womenshealth.org, and a doctor wrote this, so I assume that it is very credible.

Schmitt Date Published: March 6, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: Addresses numerous questions regarding what to expect of your body during pregnancy and how to maintain a healthy home for you and your baby during all of the changes that occur throughout pregnancy. How This Influenced My Thinking: Provided important tips with which to keep in mind later on in life if this particular things will affect me. Credibility of Source: A federal government website managed by the Office on Women's Health in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Title:Benefits of Natural Childbirth Author: Lilian Presti Date Published: June 30, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: This article gives benefits of natural childbirth. It compares these benefits to pregnancies using technology and drugs which I thought was helpful. How This Influenced My Thinking: I always thought I would do pregnancy with drugs, but after researching and reading this article I am considering natural childbirth! Credibility of Source: The article has an author and date so it shoudl be pretty reliable. It also has references to ferer back to.

Title: Water Birth Author: American Pregnancy Association Date Published: 01/2013 Why Relevant and Summary: This page shows the benefits to water birth over traditional vaginal birth outside of water, giving tips on how to prepare for a water birth, and those it would not work well for. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influences me further in my belief that a water birth is the choice for me. Credibility of Source: Yes, the references listed at the bottom of this short overview, that were used to compile the information that was provided here, are credible sources.

Title:Childbirth Options: What's the Best? Author: Brenda Conway Date Published: N.D. Why Relevant and Summary: This is a great article explaining the many different birthing options. It also gives pros and cons of each. How this influenced my thinking: I didn't realize there were so many options available with a hospital birth. Credibility of Source: The article was from Web M.D. so i think it is very credible.

Title: The Cultural Art of Breastfeeding Author: Cynthia Good Mojab, MS Date Published: October-November 2000 Why Relevant and Summary: While this article is from a pro-breastfeeding site, there is a ton of info about the culture of breastfeeding. It covers both biological and cultural aspects. How This Influenced My Thinking: I never thought about how the lack of breastfeeding in the family would influence a new mom. Credibility of Source: The La Leche League is the Pro-Breastfeeding place to go. I find this source extremely credible.

Title: Home birth: Know the pros and cons Author: Mayo Clinic Staff Date Published: 2011 Why relevant and summary: One of the birth options that I talked about was a homebirth. This article talked about why women choose to have homebirths, the cases where it would not be recommended and how to prepare for a homebirth How it influenced my thinking: It didn't change my thinking, but it was a good reference and confirmed some of the things that I said.

Title: Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Author: Jan Riordan Date Published: 1998 Why Relevant and Summary: This ebook is very relevant because it discusses how different culutres choose to breastfeed or not and how other cultures can determine if they will breastfeed or not. This ebook gets more in detail but from my reading (pgs. 716-719) it covers background information and provide examples on which culture breastfeed why or why not. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has influence my thinking because I subconsciously didn't realized why most people didn't breast feed besides it just being a trend. Credibility of Source: This is credible because it is a published book.

Why Relevant and Summary: Total overview of breastfeeding, some benefits and concerns of mothers as well as some problems one may encounter How This Influenced My Thinking: This opened my eyes to some problems that may occur during breastfeeding and also more developmental benefits. Credibility of Source: I have found WebMD is pretty credible

It especially highlights its capabilities to stop disease and build up the immune system. How This Influenced My Thinking: This helped me more scientifically understand why breast milk helps build up our immune systems with the antibodies, white blood cells, etc. Credibility of Source: healthy children's website seems reliable.

Title: Cultural differences among birthing women Author: Brenda Lane Date Published:2010 Why Relevant and Summary: Informative article that explains cultural differences in the birthing process including support system and who is involved in the process. Gives great examples across different cultures. How This Influenced My Thinking: Made me realize that there are different views on how a child should be birthed i always thought that the father has to be present no matter what in the process.
