New legislation has just passed by Barack Obama that requires every business in the U.S. to have a Sustainability Officer or a Green Officer. One of the jobs these Green Officers is to develop a sustainability performance plans. Also, businesses must create a committee on federal sustainability. Green Officer Training can help companies meet the demands of this new executive order.

Colorado Rocky Mountain School Work Crews provide an avenue for students to take leadership roles and initiate change on campus toward creating a more sustainable life. The Recycling Work Crew maintains recycling stations in all the dorms and major buildings. They collect recycled materials and take them to the local recycling center.

Two Colorado Rocky Mountain School students took part in EcoFlight's Flight Across America last week. The two students bravely flew to Jackson on a small Cessna, piloted by Bruce Gordon. This program (organized by Jane Pargiter and Krysia Carter-Giez) is designed to involve, and inform, high school age students about issues regarding biodiversity and conservation using flight and ground-based education.

To "refresh your recollection" (I am a former lawyer, after all), let me take you back. Good Guide is a beta site that rates products on three scales: environmental, nutritional, and social justice (my terms, not theirs). More than a month ago, I wrote to Good Guide through its website asking for help in understanding how it could rate a commercial "lite" yogurt (Yoplait) with all its additives, so much higher than an organic, plain whole milk (Straus) made from nothing more than organic whole milk and live yogurt cultures, and higher than an organic nonfat plain (Nancy's) made from nothing more than organic nonfat milk and live yogurt cultures.

An interesting new publication from the Royal Society titled The impact of population growth on tomorrow's world addresses some of the following questions: How do we best approach the problem of unsustainable population growth? How do we cope with unprecedented rates of demographic change? What is the relationship between population size and conflict? And should we change retirement age as population age rises?

For 50 years, Colorado Rocky Mountain School (CRMS) has practiced environmental stewardship and a commitment to sustainability. Sprawling over 300 acres of pasture and farmland at the base of western Colorado's snow-capped Mount Sopris, the high school promotes hard, meaningful work both within the classroom and, uniquely, outside, carrying on the ethos of its founders who were looking to start an independent, coed boarding school that would be "an antidote to modern, easy living" and believed that "work breeds confidence, self-satisfaction, the will to live."
