Google has launched an education category in the Google Apps Marketplace designed to help schools and universities discover and deploy new web applications that integrate with their existing Google Apps accounts. The new education category includes over 20 applications from 19 vendors ranging from learning management systems (LMS) to student tools and teaching aids - all of which integrate with Google Apps for Education. Each app can be accessed through single sign-on and the Google universal navigation bar and many offer deeper integrations that synchronize with Google Calendar and Documents. A Google Education Trainer is a bit different because it isn't as much about what you do in your classroom, it is about really learning the tools. To become a trainer, you must pass a series of tests designed to test your knowledge of Google Tools including the Google Apps for Education Admin Panel. Once you successfully pass all tests, you are considered a "Google Apps Qualified." To become a "Google Apps Education Trainer," you need to submit a video, a record of past workshops you've given, and a case study. The purpose of this process, is to show how you use Google Apps to both train other educators and innovate instruction.

"This program is designed for companies and individuals who provide professional training and support to schools using Google Apps Education Edition. The Google Apps for Education Certification is an official "stamp of approval" from Google, and gives you access to additional marketing support, training opportunities, and business visibility in the Google Apps marketplace. Meanwhile, your customers can be assured that your expertise and learning materials meet high quality standards set by the Google Apps team."

Google Apps is also governed by a detailed Privacy Policy, which ensures we will not inappropriately share or use personal information placed in our systems. The Google Apps Terms of Service contractually ensures that your institution (or students, faculty, and staff) are the sole owners of their data. Because customers own the data they put into Google Apps, we believe it should be easy for your users to move their data in and out of our systems. The controls, processes and policies that protect user data in our systems have obtained a SAS 70 Type II attestation and will continue to seek similar attestation. Google complies with applicable US privacy law, and the Google Apps Terms of Service can specifically detail our obligations and compliance with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) regulations. Google is registered with the US-EU Safe Harbor agreement, which helps ensure that our data protection compliance meets European Union standards for educational institutions.

If downloading and keeping student work is an issue then let's connect Mahara so that our students have an electronic portfolio of all their work. Google Apps for Education is fairly new and has recently added Google Groups to the mix. Maybe with a little push Google would add even more to the list. To say that its disadvantages outweigh its advantages is simply overstated.

Opening the iPhone would make educational apps much easier to publish. Apple's monopoly means e-text-book readers and classroom use of hand held computers (which is what the iPhone and iPod reall are) have to pay a toll to Apple. Right now, Apple's approval system is cloaked in mystery. Developers have no way to market their products without 'official' approval. Opening up the iPhone and by extension opening up wireless networks around the country will drive down high prices and bring connectivity to more inexpensive computing devices. I hope this FCC investigation is the domino that kicks open the door to the clouds of connectivity that are already out there!

As more Oregon schools roll out Google's free suite of productivity software this fall, they're also trying to educate parents and ease concerns about privacy. Oregon was the first state to sign up for Google Apps for Education in 2010 and make it available to K-12 school districts. The free software allows students to access their class work from home, the library, or anywhere they have internet access. But the very thing that makes Google Apps so accessible and appealing worries some parents: They don't want Google or anyone outside the district to have access to their children's private information.
