Firefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): The Send to Google Docs Firefox extension adds an entry to your right-click menu to send supported filetypes directly to Google Docs. The new entry is context sensitive, so it only appears when you right click supported filetypes, which include Word docs, PDFs, PowerPoint, Excel, and every Open Document format. You've been able to open Gmail attachments in Google Docs for quite a while now, but this extension bridges the gap and makes Google Docs that much more of a viable, web-based Microsoft Office replacement. Send to Google Docs is free, works wherever Firefox does.

Step 1: Assuming that your already have a Gmail account, go to your Google Contacts and create a new Group (let's say "Media"). Add all the contacts to this group who you want to send a personalized email. Step 2: Create a copy of this spreadsheet into your own Google Docs account. Step 3: You'll see a new "Mail Merge" menu in Google Docs near "Help." Click "Import Gmail Contacts" and authorize Google Docs to access your Google Contacts. Step 4: Click Mail Merge -> Import Gmail Contacts again and type the name of the Gmail group ("Media") that you created in Step 1. Google Docs will now automatically import the relevant Gmail contacts into the spreadsheet.

Those who depend on Google Docs know how frustrating it is when you want to make a simple change from an iPhone, but can't because Google Docs is read-only on mobile devices. Until now, that is. Google has just introduced a new mobile editor that makes it possible to make changes to your Google Docs from any iOS 3.x or later device, as well as from Android devices running Froyo (2.2).

Google Docs is a user friendly suite of online collaborative tools that come with tremendous potential for use in the classroom. Last year all of the students in our school  received Google Docs accounts and I was kept quite busy getting students and teachers up and running with the new tools, then discovering innovative ways to use them as effective tools for learning. In your document list, you'll notice various icons and descriptions listed next to the title of each doc. Here's a general overview: A lock icon means "Private" A lock icon in front of a globe means "Anyone with the link" A globe means "Public on the web"

Ideas for using Google Docs with/by students.
