Ten commandments of school tech support « Generation YES Blog - 1 views

  • The ten commandments of school tech support Thou shalt test the fix. Thou shalt talk to actual students and teachers and make time to watch how  technology works during actual class time, not just when it’s quiet. Thou shalt not make fun of the tech skills of teachers or students, nor allow anyone else in the tech department to make disparaging remarks about them. Closing trouble tickets shalt not be thine highest calling; thou shalt strive to  continually make the learning environment better. Thou shalt not elevate the system above the users. The network will be never be perfect. Learning is messy. Get thyself over it. When teaching someone a new skill, keep thy hands off the mouse. Thou shalt listen to requests with an open mind and respond in plain English. Blocking shall be controlled by educators, not filtering companies. Thy job is to enable learning, not enforce behavior. Thou shalt include students and teachers in decision-making about technology purchases and policy. Their interest is not an affront to your professionalism.

Classroom Management of Laptops - School Computing - 1 views

  • the teacher must circulate in the classroom

      This is the "Bottom Line!"
  • Don’t forget your established classroom management skills.
  • Try to find ways to celebrate all sorts of different successes.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • Catch them being good
  • Teach good note-taking skills!
  • For better discussion, lower laptop screens
  • Designate a scribe. Consider designating a student as scribe for the day and have him/her take notes for the class. Allow other students to use the laptop only during student-centered activities and not during teacher-centered lessons.
    • Michael Walker

Then the scribe can share with the rest of the class.
  • Hold students accountable.
  • Remember, it's about them; not you. You don't have to be a master of technology, nor do you have to understand everything kids can do with technology. Create a framework for an engaging, student-centered assignment and let students surprise you with their innovative contributions!
  • disruptive behavior with laptops is also more likely to occur when laptops are integrated into a learning activity where they aren't essential, or in the classrooms of teachers who have discipline issues without laptops.

Thinking about Ning… Why we choose the tools we use - 1 views

  • As I mentioned, sometimes solutions that seem inexpensive can be deceptively costly.  For example, a school that doesn’t take the time to do a full wireless survey before implementing a 1:1 program and just drops in APs in every room will likely end up with poor service and a lot of frustration for everyone involved.  A school that adopts a piece of hardware or operating system before a thorough evaluation of other options available could end up with a ton of incidental costs or face an unnecessarily limited curriculum.

  • Laptop carts do not change teaching and learning in the classroom the way that one to one does.
    • Michael Walker

One concern expressed regarding this is that parents in Edina may not like a pilot that gives 1/4 the students at a grade level this privaledge. We need to be open to the idea that while this may be an ideal way for us to pilot, we can still gain valuable information from designing lessons and units in which each student has a laptop, albeit from a cart.
  • If you were starting this from scratch...Start at the middle school. Plan how you will grow.
  • Teachers must embrace change in the role of teacher, and of students!
