The Future of Scientific Knowledge Discovery in Open Networked Environments: Summary of a Workshop - 1 views
-
Description: "The focus of this project was on computer-mediated or computational scientific knowledge discovery, taken broadly as any research processes enabled by digital computing technologies. Such technologies may include data mining, information retrieval and extraction, artificial intelligence, distributed grid computing, and others. These technological capabilities support computer-mediated knowledge discovery, which some believe is a new paradigm in the conduct of research. The emphasis was primarily on digitally networked data, rather than on the scientific, technical, and medical literature. The meeting also focused mostly on the advantages of knowledge discovery in open networked environments, although some of the disadvantages were raised as well."
Altmetrics 101: A Primer - 0 views

"The term "altmetrics" is short for "alternative metrics." These are a range of nontraditional metrics that can be used to assess the impact that scholars have on research in their areas of study. They can include the number of article downloads, citation of research in online news/social media sources, Mendeley bookmarks (a web-based system for sharing and extracting information from PDFs and other electronic documents), and nontraditional forms of scholarship. This gives it special significance in terms of the credibility of its findings, and these should be of key interest to a number of different stakeholders in the HE and research sector."
De-Mystifying the Data Management Requirements of Research Funders - 1 views
-
Abstract "Research libraries have sought to apply their information management expertise to the management of digital research data. This focus has been spurred in part by the policies of two major funding agencies in the United States, which require grant recipients make research outputs, including publications and research data, openly available. As many academic libraries are beginning to offer or are already offering assistance in writing and implementing data management plans, it is important to consider how best to support researchers. Our research examined the current data management requirements of major US funding agencies to better understand data management requirements facing researchers and the implications for libraries offering data management services for researchers."

At the European level, the Digital Agenda for Europe 2020 identifies 'opening up public data resources for re-use' as a key action in support of the Digital Single Market. 2 The European Commission is reviewing the Directive on Re-Use of Public Sector Information. The Commission's The New Renaissance report 3 , published in January 2011, emphatically endorsed open data. At the national level, for example in the UK, the higher education community has issued the Open Metadata Principles 4 calling on metadata to be openly available for innovative re-use.
