    EarthScope is an Earth science program to explore the 4-dimensional structure of the North American continent. The EarthScope Program provides a framework for broad, integrated studies across the Earth sciences, including research on fault properties and the earthquake process, strain transfer, magmatic and hydrous fluids in the crust and mantle, plate boundary processes, large-scale continental deformation, continental structure and evolution, and composition and structure of the deep Earth. In addition, EarthScope offers a centralized forum for Earth science education at all levels and an excellent opportunity to develop cyberinfrastructure to integrate, distribute, and analyze diverse data sets.

Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment in - 0 views

    This research funding opportunity is being jointly issued by the NOAA OAR Office and Weather and Air Quality (OWAQ) and the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). It seeks to obtain new knowledge of the meteorological and infrasound aspects of tornadoes in the southeastern United States (U. S.) and the social and behavioral aspects of the public response to tornado forecasts and tornado events. This new knowledge will improve our ability to understand, forecast and warn the public of tornadoes and elicit appropriate responses to mitigate damage, injuries, and loss of life. For the first time in the life of the Program, this year VORTEX-SE places an emphasis on obtaining improved understanding of the processes at play that produce tornadoes in tropical cyclone outer rainbands, as well as during the tropical-extratropical transition over land. There will be three separate competitions with three funding pools from this announcement, two for VORTEX-SE (addressing 1) the meteorological or social/behavioral priorities and 2) multi-discipline topics addressing both meteorology and social/behavioral priorities), and one for the infrasound category. Proposals in each category will be separated into independent pools based on these focus areas as specified by the Principal Investigators for the purposes of peer review, ranking, and funding.

GUMO Section 110 Two-Phase Geo-archaeological Study - 0 views

    The proposed two-phase geoarchaeological study by the University of New Mexico, Office of Contract Archeology (OCA) will provide a systematic sample documentation of geoarchaeological data within both the active and stabilized gypsum dune fields at GUMO. The sites will be located with GPS units with sub-meter accuracy that can be tied into the GUMO GIS system. The information collected in the field during the Phase I Study will be used to create inferences about the types of sites and their periods of occupation. The systematic collection of data will also allow OCA to spatially analyze the data and assess whether the ⿿Horizontal Stratigraphy Model⿝ applies at GUMO. If so, GUMO archaeologists may be able to utilize the defined zones of occupation within the dunes to predict the periods of occupations for other yet to be discovered sites. In addition, this research may also contribute to other scientific fields. For example, based on the locations of sites in proximity to the leading edge of the dune field, it may be possible to evaluate changes in the rate of dune movement per year or over several millennia. Finally, information gleaned from the Phase II Study may be useful in understanding the relationships between the development of the gypsum dunes and late Pleistocene-early Holocene paleoclimates in GUMO. These data could, in turn, provide a new understanding about the use of the landscape by GUMO⿿s earliest occupants, the Paleoindians and the evolution of site usage and occupation following the Paleoindians.

    Plasma Physics is a study of matter and physical systems whose intrinsic properties are governed by collective interactions of large ensembles of free charged particles. 99.9% of the visible Universe is thought to consist of plasmas. The underlying physics of the collective behavior in plasmas has applications to space physics and astrophysics, materials science, applied mathematics, fusion science, accelerator science, and many branches of engineering. The National Science Foundation (NSF), with participation of the Directorates for Engineering, Geosciences, and Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and the Department of Energy, Office of Science, Fusion Energy Sciences are continuing the joint Partnership in Basic Plasma Science and Engineering begun in FY1997 and renewed several times since. As stated in the original solicitation (NSF 97-39), which is superseded by the present solicitation, the goal of the Partnership is to enhance basic plasma science research and education in this broad, multidisciplinary field by coordinating efforts and combining resources of the two agencies. The current solicitation also encourages submission of proposals to perform basic plasma experiments at NSF and/or DOE supported user facilities, including facilities located at DOE national laboratories, designed to serve the needs of the broader plasma science and engineering community.

To that end, $2 million a year for an initial period of four years, including up to 20 percent a year for indirect costs, will be awarded in support of collaborations that address a mathematical or theoretical topic of fundamental scientific importance where a significant, new development creates a novel area for exploration or provides a new direction for progress in an established field. Questions addressed by the collaboration may be concrete or conceptual, but there should be little doubt that answering them would constitute a major scientific milestone. The project should involve outstanding researchers in a range of career stages. Due to the criticality of the technology prototyping and methodology testing phase of research and development in the innovation pipeline, this FOA focuses on active field testing, where the Federal government takes on the associated high cost and risks. Topic Area 1 - Pilot (FORGE Test Wells): The objective of this initiative is to select, prepare, permit, and repair idle wells for early-stage FORGE technology and methodology testing prior to or in lieu of testing in the FORGE Utah wells. These wells will be closely linked to the FORGE effort, contributing to the overall goals and mission of the FORGE initiative by enabling higher-risk technology testing. Topic Area 2 - Amplify (EGS Near-Field RD&D): This field validation effort will culminate in new power production, adding to the economic viability of these existing geothermal fields and illustrating that near-field EGS can be successfully deployed now and that low permeability/unproductive wells near existing hydrothermal fields can be turned into valuable assets using EGS techniques.

Geoarchaeology at the Osotuoy Unit - ARPO - 0 views

    (1) Sample earthworks at the Osotuoy Unit (minimally Mounds A and B, other locations dependent upon access). Sampling will be done using a geoprobe DT22 sampling system which extracts soil cores. Cores will penetrate from the current mounds surface into non-cultural contexts beneath the mounds. It is estimated that 12 cores ranging from 4 to 10 meters would be required to sufficiently sample Mounds A and B; (2) Describe and interpret soil cores using standard geoarcheological terminology; (3) Extract samples for dating from viable contexts and submit samples to appropriate laboratories; (4) Provide ground penetrating radar of the appropriate type to identify internal structural features of the mounds, operate the equipment in a manner that will provide optimal results, and interpret the data to understand the construction process involved in the mound's creation; (5) Produce a final written report that details the research questions, methods used, findings and results, and conclusions; (6) Provide all project records (e.g., field notes, maps, photographs, analysis data) to NPS for curation

Conduct Geophysical Sub-surface Resource Survey at Alaskas National Parks - 0 views

    Geophysical Sub-surface surveys employ Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology to detect cultural material buried beneath the surface, without having to dig holes, which further disturb the resources, to collect this data. Furthermore, GPR surveys have recently been used to locate human burials, which has been immensely important for park managers and planner that have ground disturbing projects in the works. Because of the effectiveness of the technology and methodology for identifying buried archaeological deposits and features many parks are looking to employ this technology in their parks to build a greater understanding of where archaeological resources are that we want to avoid and also in some cases to study. To make this research affordable and to maximize the cost-effectiveness of the fieldwork these parks have agreed to coordinate their efforts to bring a specialist in to conduct the GPR surveys.
