Genealogy Research Resources

Since 1994, the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University has used digital media and computer technology to democratize history—to incorporate multiple voices, reach diverse audiences, and encourage popular participation in presenting and preserving the past. We sponsor more than two dozen digital history projects and offer free tools and resources for historians.

The Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS) is a UK national service aiding the discovery, creation and preservation of digital resources in and for research, teaching and learning in the arts and humanities. The National Sea Grant Library (NSGL) is the official NOAA Sea Grant archive and home to a comprehensive collection of Sea Grant–funded documents from over 30 programs and projects across the country. This collection covers a wide variety of subjects, such as oceanography, marine education, aquaculture, fisheries, aquatic nuisance species, coastal hazards, seafood safety, limnology, coastal zone management, marine recreation, and law.

Welcome to the Exploratorium's Digital Library. The different collections in the library include digital media and digitized museum materials related to interactive exhibits and scientific phenomena, including images, educational activities in PDF and html formats, QuickTime movies, streaming media, and audio files. You may search, select and download digital files for individual, noncommercial educational use. Large scale or commercial use is strictly prohibited without permission (please see our Use Policy).

The Ewell Sale Stewart Library of the Academy of Natural Sciences houses many rare, beautiful, and important works on the natural sciences, books that most people will never see in their lifetimes. These books were published over the last five centuries, and document the discovery of plant and animal species by early explorers as they traveled the world. By publishing the pages from these books digitally and providing access on the web, the Library hopes to share them with scientists, scholars, and the public.

The AMNH Digital Library was launched in 1999 to develop an integrated database of library resources and natural history collections. The digital library will enable scientists, scholars, and educators working anywhere in the world to study unique and rare research materials from the Museum's Library and scientific collections.

StoryCorps is a national project to instruct and inspire people to record one another's stories in sound. We're here to help you interview your grandmother, your uncle, the lady who has worked at the luncheonette down the block for as long as you can remember—anyone whose story you want to hear and preserve.

The UK Placename Finder is part of the suite of free internet-based tools provided by this Archaeology UK for the communities of field archaeologists, family historians and placename researchers. The internet-based database holds information on the names of more than 160,000 UK places and provides a number of methods for interrogating the dataset.
