    In 1898 national attention focused on Florida as the Spanish-American War began. The port city of Tampa served as the primary staging area for U.S. troops bound for the war in Cuba. The arrival of over 30,000 troops, including Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders cavalry unit, changed Tampa from a small town to a city.

    This series consists of photographic negatives taken by the Brown family of Eastpoint, Florida, circa 1898 to 1912. The photographs depict members of the Brown family and other early settlers of Eastpoint; scenery and buildings of Eastpoint, Apalachicola, and St. George Island; ships and boats in the Apalachee and Apalachicola Bays; local schools; and farm workers.

    This collection consists of the surviving glass negatives of noted portrait photographer Alvan S. Harper. The collection includes about 200 portraits of Philadelphia people, some identified; about 100 views of Tallahassee buildings and street scenes, along with a few from Monticello, Quincy, St. Marks, and Panacea; and about 1,300 portraits of groups and individual men, women, and children, mostly unidentified. Especially noteworthy are Harper's portraits of middle class African-Americans.
