In 2001 the company opened an automated kitchen center that preps 2,000 meals for the human rank and file. The bots cook rice, pack lunch boxes, and wash dishes.

in one of Fanuc's 40,000-square-foot factories near Mt. Fuji, robots are building other robots at a rate of about 50 per 24-hour shift and can run unsupervised for as long as 30 days at a time.

Contour Crafting (CC) is a layered fabrication technology developed by Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis of the University of Southern California. Contour Crafting technology has great potential for automating the construction of whole structures as well as sub-components. Using this process, a single house or a colony of houses, each with possibly a different design, may be automatically constructed in a single run, embedded in each house all the conduits for electrical, plumbing and air-conditioning.

Robots taking over the world is reserved for the movies and far fetched in reality. But a world in which humans and robots can co-exist is a distinct possibility. At least that's the view and goal of Pleasanton-based Adept Technology, a public company which develops "intelligent" robotics used in everything from packaging to precision placement of parts. Typically robots work in fenced-off areas where safety can be tightly controlled. Adept tries to develop less complex robotics that eliminate danger concerns. "We believe in the not-so-distant future there is a possibility that will allow people and robots to operate in the same environment working closely together," said John Dulchinos, chief executive of Adept.
