A Tree Formed Tower for the Amazon - 0 views

  •
One major green belt that has seen the devastating results of deforestation is the Amazon jungle. From 1991 until 2001 the total area cleared jumped from 415,000 km2 to 587,000 km2, proving that this massive, unsustainable deforestation effort has not been just a thing of the past. In fact, it was only last year that deforestation figures slowed to their lowest numbers yet. For many in the green building industry, that is how they would like it to continue. Offering to lead this conservation effort is London-based architectural firm Marks Barfield. Who have impressed architecture and environmental communities worldwide with their £6.4m proposal for a research centre in the Amazon, which will include a central, tree-shaped observation tower and 6 miles of tree top canopy walkways. Due to the nature and function of this tower, in addition to the limitations that the rural, fragile Brazilian environment holds, a sustainable building ideology forms the foundation of the proposal.

Buildings Collapse in World Cup City - 0 views

  •
Three buildings - one twenty storeys high - have collapsed in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, killing at least five people and injuring many others. The collapse occurred late on Wednesday (Rio time), near the municipal theatre on the city's Cinelandia square. The tallest of the buildings was twenty storeys high, says the city's mayor Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, whilst the second tallest had ten floors and the third had three or four. The latest developments come as Rio remains under worldwide scrutiny in the lead up to host the World Cup soccer in 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

GBCA Retrofit Move Gains Momentum - 0 views

  •
The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) has been ardently backing a complete retrofit of all 'brown' or sustainably unfit operational buildings in this country. Which is only logical, as these buildings, particularly in the commercial sector, join together to become the largest carbon emitters in Australia. Their move to transform these unfit buildings has received a huge boost recently, with the support of Australand for their Green Star - Performance rating tool. The rating tool will become the backbone of the GBCA's work moving forward, as it will most precisely "help building owners, operators and occupants to measure and monitor the environmental impact of their buildings and take practical action to improve their buildings' performance".

Demolition for Beloved Melbourne Architecture - 0 views

  •
Arguably one of Melbourne's most controversial construction projects has been given final approval, leaving a trail of both dismayed and jubilant responses. The major architectural redevelopment project at the focus of this almost five year long drama is the Windsor Hotel, and its semi-demolition by the Halim Group in early 2013.  The project has been marked as one of Victoria's most prominent in the latest state analysis, and comes with a sizeable price tag. The $250 million redevelopment will see the refurbishment of the interiors of the building, which was built in 1883. The interior restoration will maximise the amount of rooms available, increasing the capacity from 180 to 300 rooms. The ballroom and other rooms will also be upgraded and redeveloped, with Heritage Victoria approving everything.

Abu Dhabi Arts Centre - Sculpture or Building? - 0 views

  •
In the construction and design industry, architecture is one of the most complex and multi-faceted sectors. As we have stated previously, it encompasses a whole range of broad and varying components, from mathematics to the currently trending biology. At its most basic root though, architecture deals with form. It is for this reason that architecturally designed buildings are able to become art forms as one of the industry's most artistically based facets. It only makes sense then, due to the crossover and widely varied field, that some buildings would share these sculpturally formed aspects more than others. One such building that is due for completion this year and is an example of the aforementioned form is architectural firm Zaha Hadid's Performing Arts Centre in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Flood Resistant Architecture Becomes Top Priority - 0 views

  •
Even with all of the effort going into infrastructure and damming solutions to support flood-ravaged areas of Australia, Queensland and New South Wales continue to battle against water levels that are simply too high. The latest floods up north have been so extreme that some areas still remain completely isolated with more storms and extreme weather conditions to continue. While these areas face the brunt of the flooding in this country, and have a long history of these events, the support, ongoing and present from both government and public entities, means that responsive action has been swift with future irrigation planning in place. However, these freak weather incidents will still occur, and several architectural bodies have called for a push in further resilience planning

Office Building Makes Perth Statement - 0 views

  •
Shaking up the Perth Skyline is a construction venture that brings together architecture acumen and functionality. A mix of these two parts can only create statement-making buildings. Developed by Leighton Properties, Stage One of the Kings Square development is set to have a substantial impact on the area both visually and in terms of market value with the project featuring as a major commercial venture in our most recent market analysis. After an unsettled 2011, its seems the construction giants are coming back in full force with a number of what promise to be statement making developments. The Kings Square development will be located on the former Perth Entertainment (PEC) site and will have a mixed-use function.

reality check: Imagination, fantasy, creativity, play and the 'real world' - 0 views

  •
but to read ... some convergence . Disengagement from the 'real world' is a common criticism of the discipline of architecture. With architects serving only 10-15% of the population and an even lower number in housing design, it is not difficult to understand the reasons for this critique. Conversely, architecture is also about imagination, creativity, play and fantasy-all activities promoted in architectural education, particularly design studio. Through this tutorial, we will try to understand whether architecture needs to touch base with the 'real world'. We will investigate what this mean for architecture and what is needed for imagination, fantasy and play to become tools in the search for a sustainable future.
