Teaching students about Creative Commons and appropriate use of images - 0 views

  •
Little do many people know, you can't just use any images off the internet in your blog posts. Not only is this ethically incorrect but you could leave yourself open to copyright infringement. Explaining Creative Commons and using images in blog posts Wanting to make this process clear to my students, I typed up a document explaining copyright, copyright infringement and Creative Commons while also offering step-by-step instructions on how to use FlickrCC to upload and attribute images in blog posts.

High dynamic range imaging - 0 views

  •
In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of luminances between light and dark areas of a scene than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.

Shahi - A visual dictionary | Blachan Lab - 0 views

This is a very cool visual dictionary. Type in a word and it combines wiktionary content with Flickr images. You can set it to pull from Google and Yahoo images, too, but the richest images are from Flickr. Very interesting to see images for the more intangible nouns such as love and hope. This could be a great tool useful for building a vocabulary wiki for a class.

Just a word of caution. I tried the word "anger" and ended up with a topless woman from Flickr. Granted, the photo was done very artistically, but the images are more definitely NOT censored.

HDR with a Nikon D40, Bracketeer & iPhoto : Bart Busschots - 0 views

There's two distinct steps to producing an HDR image. The first is to combine the multiple shots into a single image and the second is to tweak the display of that image to actually show all the data in a sensible way. The last part is the hard part and is called Tonal Mapping.

ImageCodr.org - 8 views

  •
Flickr currently hosts more than 75 million images that are licensed under a Creative Commons license. Depending on the license, you may use the images on your webpage, or make changes to it. There are many things to check. With ImageCodr.org, there is no need to do all this manually, you simply enter in the URL of the picture page (as seen in your browser) you are interested in and ImageCodr.org will generate the ready to use HTML code. It will also display a brief and easy license summary, so you don't get in legal trouble because you missed something.

Search Flickr by colour set - super tool for finding images that complement your design - check licence tho
  •
This is one of the coolest sites. Select the colors you want, up to 10, and it will search Flickr for images with those colors. It doesn't filter by creative commons though, but a great way to find images that will match your website color scheme.

From this page in Flickr you can search Creative Commons images that have only requested an attribution for their use. The 100 most recent images that have been licensed like this are shown, but there is a search field.

One of the best ways to infuse technology into your classroom experience is to have students create their own primary data with a digital camera. Cameras are an easy to use and motivating tool for students. Instead of searching the Internet for a copyright free image to use, have them create their own pictures whenever possible.
