Mastercard is carrying out the first pilot of a digital identity programme designed to let people prove who they are immediately, safely and securely in both the digital and the physical world.

The Thai Anti-Money Laundering Office reportedly announced that, starting in September, local digital exchanges must verify their customers' identities through a "dip-chip" machine that requires clients to be physically present. A digital ID solution for citizens, businesses and government bodies, the Perseid e-ID project is being carried out in partnership with identity program Perseid Network and decentralized credential verification protocol Shyft Network.

According to Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire, in the world of crypto assets, on the Treasury's proposed crypto-asset wallet rule: a report that includes a blockchain address essentially gives law enforcement a data feed that includes identity + blockchain addresses and the ability to monitor, in real-time, all of the that customer's flows. This is without any consent. Digital bearer assets with public chains combined with identity is a level of surveillance that does not exist in the existing financial system.

The Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI) published a report that evaluates the extent to which retail central bank digital currency (CBDC) can advance financial inclusion in emerging market and developing economy (EMDE) countries. It concludes that, retail CBDC can be designed to alleviate identity gaps, and mobile phone and digital access divides through its unique ability to generate digital identity proxies and enable offline capabilities while being device agnostic. However, CBDC will not automatically advance financial inclusion, and if not designed appropriately, could reinforce existing barriers. Also, in many EMDE jurisdictions, they are likely to be limited by poor electricity coverage, access to (and affordability of) CBDC-enabled devices and limited cash-in and cash-out infrastructure. Finally, the report concludes that CBDC may not always be the right tool for addressing financial inclusion in different EMDE country contexts relative to other digital payment interventions. The unique feature of CBDC, which makes it distinct from other digital payments instruments, is that is issued by the central bank. But this feature does not necessarily make CBDC a better tool.

The legislation of the European Digital Identity Wallet is finalized. The wallet can be used to store credentials like government IDs, drivers licenses, diplomas and insurance policies in a mobile app. It can, for example, be used as identification when opening bank accounts, or use any government service anywhere in Europe. It can also be used to log in and sign contracts, or present selected attributes like age threshold compliance. The Digital Identity Working Group (DIWG) has proposed a set of high-level principles to enable future mutual recognition and interoperability of digital identities. The members of the DIWG are from Australia, Canada, Finland, Israel, New Zealand, Singapore, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. This is the group's first set of publicly released work since its 2020 inception.

Türkiye plans to use blockchain technology for online public services logins. e-Devlet, Türkiye's digital government portal used to access a wide range of public services, will use a blockchain-based digital identity to verify Turkish citizens during login.

Brazilian banks will be implementing a new standardized blockchain identity solution co-developed by IBM and the central bank, CIP. It is reportedly to be integrated into the Brazilian Payment System.

A "self-sovereign identity" system, in which consumers are able to protect their own data, is being developed by the participants for faster services. For instance, a student can be issued a new ID in less time as they won't have to submit related papers in person, thanks to blockchain technology.

CipherTrace and Shyft have launched a blockchain-based identity and attestation platform aimed to help crypto firms meet the new FATF "travel rule" while still maintaining user privacy. The firms will build KYC and AML ecosystem in which participating exchanges can securely transfer Proof of Knowledge without disclosing personally identifying information.
