Active classroom management - 0 views

  •
An uncomfortable issue nowadays is student's disruptions during the period of class. This takes place for several reasosns. But the main one is when students do not have motivation according to their interests; something to keep them awake and active in class. The site above will give you a chance to have better perspectives in acting.

Spanish the second language in the USA - 2 views

  •
Spanish is the second most-common language in the United States after English. There are more Spanish speakers in the U.S. than there are speakers of Chinese, French, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined. According to the 2009 American Community Survey conducted by the United States Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language spoken at home by over 35.5 million people aged 5 or older. There are 45 million Hispanics who speak Spanish as a first or second language and there are 6 million Spanish students, making it the world's second-largest Spanish-speaking community, only after Mexico and ahead of Spain, Colombia and Argentina. Roughly half of all U.S. Spanish speakers also speak English "very well", based on the self-assessment Census question respondents.

The acitivuty to be used is called: FISHBOWL Teacher distributes the article to be read. Teacher sets up a fishbowl by having students get into two circles, one inside the other with the students facing each other. After two minutes the inside circle rotates moving one person over so each person is facing someone new. For another two minutes they can discuss another topic or the same one. The inside circle continues rotating until they are back in front of their original partner. At the end teacher asks fro volunteers to talk about their impressions on the activity.

Are Women Human? And Other International Dialogues - 1 views

  •
Violence and abuse inflicted on women by men is not treated with the same seriousness accorded to a human rights violation, or torture, or terrorism, or a war crime, or a crime against humanity, or an atrocity, despite resembling each of these things closely at least and precisely at most. Press Releases is a task that be used with this article. The article is presented to students and they have to research on a woman that has suffered abuse and violence during the terrorists attacks of Shining Path and MRTA. Students have to write a press release about their findings This will provide reflection and publicity! .

Lesson Plans | Amnesty International USA - 4 views

  •
Amnesty International is a global movement of people fighting injustice and promoting human rights (http://www.amnestyusa.org/our-work). This website offers lesson plans that have been carefully planned by professionals. It also offers Film Curriculum Guides and Teaching Guides for Educators.
  •
There seems to be a wide variety of lesson plans on many issues dealing with human rights and for many different levels of students. I don't know whether these lesson plans could be used as presented, but they appear to provide at least a blueprint for a lesson plan. I also like the references given in the lesson plan, and the plans are easily downloaded.
  •
I had a look at this site after seeing it recommended here on Diigo (thanks!) and it seems to have a lot of potential.  I agree with Richard that teachers would probably need to adapt some of the activities. There are some nice materials though and the 'Rights & Responsibilities' and 'The Right to an Education' are a nice lead-in to the topic of human right as they use the familiar topic of school to get students thinking.

(these are the headings in the article) Students will travel from each piece of paper and take turns writing down the points/ideas for each heading that attracts their attention.

Bulldozer Exhibition - 1 views

  •
Bulldozer Exhibition was an unofficial art exhibition of Moscow avant-garde artists on September 15, 1974. The exhibition was forcefully broken-up by a large police force that included bulldozers and water cannons. The four hours in the forest of the Izmailovo exhibition has often been remembered as "The Half-day of Freedom." It was a political act against the oppressive regime, rather than an artistic event. Teaching ideas: 1. Make a presentation about the artists participating in the exhibition. 2. Discuss the political situation in Russia of that time. 3. Talk about freedom of expression.
  •
Anna, you might remember the Scenario type of activity you did in Integrating the Internet. I can see an interesting Scenario being written on this event. You could have them investigate this event as police officer, or write about the event as historian, or reflect on it as one of the artists who had works exhibited. http://legacy.lclark.edu/~krauss/usia/syllabus3b.html#day4 Lots of possibilities! Home | Human Rights Watch - 2 views

This seems to be a place to start with for high level ESL students. The site lays out a wide range of issues, there are many articles to read, and the site appears to be very user-friendly. Look at the geographical organization. One can also search by category of human rights. Perhaps as an initial exploration of the topic, students could choose an issue they found interesting and report back to their small groups what the issue is and why they chose it. This might encourage other students to become familiar with that issue.
