When Images "Lie": Critical Visual Literacy | Digital Is ... - 0 views

  •
Collected by Danielle Nicole DeVoss on Mar 09 11 "What does it mean to be "visually" literate? How can we encourage students to be more deliberate and careful in how they look at the images that circulate in today's digital culture? (...) What I've included here are some historical examples and discussion points, some contemporary examples and discussion points, and some ways to educate ourselves and to engage students in critical visual literacy."

Not really a "breaking news" bookmark, but shared on the strength of Pound's "Culture is news that remains news".

  •
"June 7, 2011, 5:55 pm By Jeff Young A university press in China appears to be selling transcripts of Yale University's free online courses in a new volume, sparking complaints from Yale officials. Under the terms of the course giveaway, called Open Yale Courses, others cannot profit from the material. (...) An official from Shaanxi Normal University told Global Times that it secured permission from the author but not from Yale, and added that it is now investigating the matter."

Now You See It // The Blog of Author Cathy N. Davidson » Stagnant Future, Standard Tests: Pointed Response to NY Times "Grading the Digital School"" - 1 views

  •
Sept. 6, 2011 "Matt Richtel's panoramic essay, "In Classroom of the Future, Stagnant Scores." weighs in this morning on the topic of "Grading the Digital School." I found myself cheering and jeering alternately throughout this piece. Why? Because it so quickly confuses "standards" with "standardized test scores" and technology put into classrooms with "preparing kids for a digital future (actually, the digital present: it's here, it's now, like it or not). These confusions are so pervasive in our culture and so urgent that I want to take a moment to focus on them. "

Translation of the quotation: "... teachers self-training (with a community's support that isn't available in formal courses) is the only one that can create and improve the teaching capacities of the teachers (at the level of new tech tools and improvement of praxis). Therefore, what are we waiting for before we reshape that "official" training and convert it into this so needed personalized training? Or: why, given the evidence that self-training within a community gives the best result, does the Administration not take this path?"

June 17, 2011, 5:11 pm By Marc Parry "Colleges and libraries have been up in arms all week over a proposed budget that would have forced the University of Wisconsin to return $39-million in broadband grants and withdraw from a nonprofit high-speed networking cooperative. Well, state lawmakers have changed course-for now, anyway."
