Thinking About Nonprofit Evaluation as Affected by Time - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly - 0 views

  • What can one reasonably expect to be learned in short-term evaluation that is useful to guide further development? What exactly is reasonable to try to measure? All of us on both sides of the grant would love to be able to draw a straight line from the check being deposited in the non-profit’s account to a significant improvement in a burgeoning social issue 12 months later. But one response to the axiom that you can’t manage what you can’t measure is a paraphrase of Einstein’s observation: “Not everything that can be measured is important, and not everything that is important can be measured.”

State of Evaluation 2012 - 0 views

  •
Innovation Network's "State of Evaluation 2012" study (October 2012) draws from a representative sample of US nonprofits and provides a bevy of statistics and insight, including comparisons to results from a similar 2010 survey. With fewer than one-third of nonprofits demonstrating promising capacities and behaviors to meaningfully engage in measurement, the authors conclude that the state of evaluation in the social sector can best be judged only as "fair."

A recent (2012) special issue of the The Canadian Journal of Program Evaluation was devoted to learning from "less-than-successful evaluation experiences." The volume presents 11 cases of evaluations that failed to achieve intended success (contextually and situationally defined). Two synthesis discussion articles complete the volume.
