Google's Virtual Light: The Digital Humanities as a Space for Cognitive Dissidence? | H... - 0 views

  •
This short article begins the discussion of what role the Digital Humanities will play when Google comes out with glasses that have cameras built in that will enable "real-time geolocation, facial recognition software, the journaling and storing in the cache and third-party's servers of everywhere you go and see whilst wearing the glasses." He questions how we can use these gadgets to our benefit while still protecting human rights and freedom of speech.

I really like the black-and-white photo in this article that shows the group of people wearing 3D glasses--that's exactly the visual I had in my head while reading this article. It's kind of unsettling to think that that image could become an everyday reality in the not-so-distant future.

Reviewing Pinterest, the Newest Social Media Site - NYTimes.com - 2 views

I really need to try out Pinterest. I have heard great things about it! PS. Maybe these people do not lead the lives of grad students? So perhaps they have more time? haha
  •
Martina, I did not understand Pinterest for a long time - had an account and never used it! Then a friend took 2 minutes to show me how it works - and I've been hooked ever since. Regardless of anything any critic or fan says of Pinterest, it's a pretty fantastically brilliant website. (And a lot fun!)

I'm absolutely addicted to Pinterest, much more so than Facebook! Pinterest and Diigo seem to have operate on a similar premises: social bookmarking with an attractive user interface.

Secure Your Browser: Add-Ons to Stop Web Tracking - 0 views

  •
There have been a lot of posts about web tracking in light of the recent changes in Google. This is an interesting article, but one of the things I like the best is the Collusion display of who's tracking your data.

I know we would all have access to this via our reading and a Google search, but I thought I would throw it up here for easy access in case anyone was interested in checking it out.

Pinterest Allows Websites to Block Pinning - 0 views

  • 99% of the pins on Pinterest are against the company’s own Terms of Service. Pinterest states that when users pin items, this indicates they are either the exclusive owners of the material or someone has granted them access to re-publish content.
  • One of the points of “Pinterest Etiquette” also stands to remind users to credit sources. Though it is not enforced, Pinterest says, “finding the original source is always preferable to a secondary source such as Google Image Search or a blog entry.”
  • Pinterest is moving towards correcting these flaws. Pinterest is currently following the Digital Millenmium Copyright Act, and will remove any image that someone claims is violating copyright laws.

AXE's Channel - YouTube - 1 views

  •
This probably seems ridiculous that I'm sharing this, but this directly relates to a paper I wrote last semester about the rhetoric employed by AXE and now I think they're making a move that applies to this class. Here we have some combination of McLuhan's idea of media being an extension of man and we see elements of IF as people actively contribute the making of a graphic novel and then are characterized by the creators for their input all the while fusing their digital selves to some sort of global and digital AXE alliance. Imagine how difficult it would be to by a different product once you become part of their story and your digital self participates (to channel the ideas of Barry Brummett) in this particular reality.

Upvote This: Reddit Users Are Writing a Law to Protect the Internet - 0 views

  •
This article talks about an alternative to SOPA and PIPA written by Reddit users. There's a link to the Reddit community and Google document they're working on. Although it's difficult for me to see how this document could impact/influence any actual legislation, redditors have had some success making waves in the past. After GoDaddy announced its support for SOPA, Reddit users staged a boycott. GoDaddy ultimately changed its position.

How to delete your Google Browsing History before new policy - 0 views

This was interesting trying to turn off (or "pause") my web history! This kind of stuff creeps me out-how much "web people" know about us and our personal lives.

Codecademy -- Free Programming Lessons - 0 views

Codecademy is the easiest way to learn how to code. It's interactive, fun, and you can do it with your friends.

I have messed around with this, and I think I came near graduating the free class that they offer. It was useful, but I didn't find that it got me too far into javascript. I did find that I liked the points and badges. Did you see the pay option alternative site (I think linked off Code Academy somewhere ... or it comes up when you search Google for Code Academy) where you can learn various coding languages as you play games? One of them teaches you CSS or Javascript as you fight zombies. If you didn't have to pay ... I would totally get into that. :)
