In this article it's saying that 20 pounds of food is wasted each month for each of the 311 million americans. That amounts to $1,350 to $2,275 a month.  That's what most people make in a month. Also throwing away cereal that isn't all the way gone, just to clear or make room in your pantry.

The United Nations has predicted that the U.S. will need about 70 percent more food to feed the projected population, in 2050, with how much we waste today. We're not only wasting food,we're also wasting water, energy, chemicals, packaging, and gas transporting discarded food.
