This article brings up a good point, should we allow an act of terrorism to force us to give up our own rights. If someone points a gun at someone on the street their first instinct is to protect themselves, so they will do anything. They will give up their hard earned money, their possessions, even their dignity by begging for mercy.

Treyvon Martin utilized the Stand My Ground laws to escape persecution when perpetrators entered his home attempting to harm him. The Stand Your Ground Laws were criticized under harsh scrutiny following the acts described above. By focusing on certain categories of mental illness researchers say federal gun law overlooks those at greater risk of violence. The government believes that it is very important that they keep guns away from the mentally ill individuals in our society.

Those with mental illness are shown to have a higher risk of acting out violent crimes (specifically with the use of a gun). However, this is not the case all of the time due to the fact that there are still an abundant amount of shootings each year where the criminal(s) behind the weapon do not have any mental illnesses. We should be looking into the psychological factors of the criminals behind the gun, but also doing more extensive background checks and setting stricter limitations on who is able to purchase/receive guns.

President Obama talks about how he will make a stand against gun violence making sure background checks are enforced . He mentions that America is dealing with sadness with school shootings and violence across the country wants to change that. Mr. Obama felt it was his duty to stop this act before it gets out of control.

Civic leaders, activists, artists and others are celebrating, marching and paying homage Monday to Martin Luther King Jr., marking the 30th anniversary of the federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader. In South Carolina, civil rights leaders planned a march to their state capitol as in past years when their rally highlighted calls to remove the Confederate flag from Statehouse grounds.

I'm really glad this symbol is being recognized and taken down in other states, especially those with discriminating acts recently taking place.

I think this is a great thing. Especially considering all of the racial issues we have been having lately through out the country I think this is a huge step in the right direction.
