Towards a Smart European Energy Policy by EU Energy Policy Blog - 0 views

  •
the appropriate combination of a 'full' EU energy policy, a 'Schengen-like' energy policy and purely regional energy policies and schemes has to be thoroughly and decisively investigated, not least because it is one of the few areas of maneuver in which Europeans have to keep making progress through the hard times to come. Energy Efficiency Coalition to Enforce Standards Globally - REEEP - The Renewable Energ... - 0 views

  • In February 2008, the Mexican environment minister announced that 30,000 environmentally-friendly homes are to be built by 2011. The new housing is to be equipped with smart devices like solar water heating, low-energy lighting, high-efficiency appliances and low-flow plumbing fixtures. This pioneering project is to be rolled out in subsequent years as Mexico’s plan for 20 million new homes over the next 20 years starts to unfold, using new building standards to allow energy efficient construction to be applied consistently in each housing development.

EP votes on the Electricity Directive - 0 views

  • ITRE voted that ownership unbundling of vertically integrated companies (carrying out both generation/sales and transmission) be obligatory
  • Member States adopt a definition of "energy poverty"
  • An obligation should be placed on distribution companies by national regulatory authorities to introduce smart meters ("bi-directional electronic meters") "which shall be rolled out to all consumers within 10 years after entry into force of the Directive".

ENN: Rising Sun for Electric Cars - 0 views

shared by Glycon Garcia on 05 May 08 - Cached
  • At Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), as a complement to our work on renewable energy hedges, we are working to transform energy use on campus. One project underway is a system of grid-tied electric vehicles (Vehicle to Grid or V2G) combined with a solar photovoltaic charging system and smart computer control.

Electric grid meets Web 2.0, savings results - 0 views

  • The Department of Energy has just wrapped up a fascinating experiment in Washington State in which it provided both homeowners and their appliances with tools that can sense stress on the power grid. Homeowners who made use of the tools saved money—approximately 10 percent on their electric bills—and the grid was more stable, too.

A strip of paper that speaks | Tech news blog - CNET News.com - 0 views

  •
Labels That Talk, from Kailua Hawaii, has come up with software that lets consumers print high-density bar codes on strips of paper that store recorded voice messages. Scan it with a handheld scanner and it plays back a message. The strip of paper you see in the picture can hold about eight kilobits, enough for a ten-second voice message, said Ken Berkun, president and founder.

Landmark Study on Energy Efficiency - 0 views

  • Like any typical consumer, the participants in SmartPower’s study want to know what is in it for them. They yearn to be inspired. They do not want to be preached to. They want to feel that they are a part of a “we” approach. They want to understand and feel the real world ramifications of their actions. They’re busy. They’re over worked. They want simple, quick tasks they can do which will make a difference. They want to feel smart and cool. They want to feel empowered and knowledgeable about saving money and saving energy. One of the participants responded, “When I save energy it’s like a light bulb has gone off in my head that I’m getting it.”

IEEE Spectrum: Can plug-in hybrid electric vehicles keep the electric grid stable? - 0 views

  • After safety, the longevity of the batteries in a plug-in hybrid is the greatest unknown. Can a plug-in hybrid’s battery pack retain the bulk of its energy capacity over 10 years of daily use and more than 4000 full-discharge cycles? (For a deeper look at the challenges facing plug-in hybrid batteries, see “Lithium Batteries Take to the Road”.)[ LINK: http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/sep07/5490 ] As Don Hillebrand of Argonne National Laboratory, in Illinois, said tartly, “Batteries are the showstopper.” Periodic demands from the grid, even for only a small fraction of the battery’s stored energy, would clearly affect the cells’ life span—but no one has data on how much. Another open issue is the development of creative financing models for replacement battery packs costing several thousand U.S. dollars even after mass production is achieved. Third-party battery leasing could be one answer, if combined with a secondary market for batteries whose performance has fallen below automotive levels. Carmakers, electric utilities, and large consumer-financing groups are quietly batting around these notions to see if they can build a financial model that makes sense for all three parties.

Solar Panels - Can They Survive Bad Weather? | Mindzle - Living Green Smart - Sustainab... - 0 views

  • The biggest question asked when planning to install solar panels is, “can they tolerate extreme weather conditions?” Every year many roofs are damaged by the weather extremes.  Is it really wise to put solar panels on a roof that has to withstand those kinds of weather extremes?  Here is some information to help you decide.

With green "in," home automation's time is here - 0 views

  •
Intelligent consumer use of our limited energy supply is now recognised as one of the major factors in the green revolution. According to the Smart Energy Home Initiative, which brings together companies to overcome the barriers that prevent sustainable houses from being the norm, buildings consume 40% of the energy used in Europe and contribute to 36% of greenhouse gas emissions, with the loss in monetary terms estimated at €60 billion a year. Using home automation technology for energy control can reduce power consumption by limiting use to where and when it is most needed … therefore saving money on energy bills without affecting quality of life.

Engineering a Smart Grid For Energy's Future - washingtonpost.com - 0 views

  •
The process, Current says, lets a utility more efficiently manage the distribution of electricity by allowing two-way communication between consumers and energy suppliers via the broadband network on the power lines. Based on data they receive from hundreds of homes, utilities can monitor usage and adjust output and pricing in response to demand. Consumers can be rewarded with reduced rates by cutting back on consumption during peak periods. And computerized substations can talk to each other so overloaded circuits hand off electricity to underused ones, helping to prevent blackouts.

Utilities Could Cash In On Climate Bill - Forbes.com - 0 views

  •
Assume for the moment that Congress will not pass a carbon cap-and-trade scheme this year but that it does pass an energy bill that streamlines the siting of new transmission lines and requires utilities to get a certain minimum percentage of their electricity from clean sources. What opportunities would this open for AEP? On the efficiency side it would allow me to put capital to work on GridSmart [AEP's smart-grid initiative]. And instead of being a net buyer of renewable energy from third-party generators, I'd begin to be a net builder of renewables. It's the same issue as always: I'm satisfying a state or federal renewable requirement, and my customers' rates are going to go up anyways, so why shouldn't my shareholders get the benefit of our building that new generating capacity rather than buying the electricity on the market? If I'm just a net buyer in the market, I'm forced to buy solar power at 30 cents, and that goes through to my customers, and I don't think that's fair. I want to make sure my shareholders and my customers get a pretty good shake out of this.
