Only 7 EU countries join International Carbon Action Partnership « 3E Intelli... - 0 views

  • the new international forum links up the EU Commission and seven member states (France, Germany, the UK, Italy, the Netherlands, Ireland and Portugal) with eleven US and Canadian regional states (the likes of New York, Maine, California and British Columbia) to exchange information and best practices about their efforts to create carbon markets through a cap-and-trade system. The bad news: where are the other 20 EU member states? And what about other federal governments such as the US, Russia, China or India?

Companies, Carbon and Climate Change: The Carbon Disclosure Project Issues its 5th Glob... - 0 views

  • Today, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) released its much-anticipated Global Corporate Climate Change Report (CDP5). This is the fifth annual report by the CDP tracking carbon disclosure and attitudes toward climate change in the world's largest companies. The CDP additionally this year launched the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI), an honor roll for companies who are best addressing climate change issues.

The economic and political foolishness of paying for carbon reduction | Gristmill: The ... - 0 views

  • This illiteracy has caused us to focus on the wrong problems, and the wrong solutions ... and it's stalled the realization of any politically tenable carbon reductions.Ironically, while the goal of reducing carbon emissions has political allies and adversaries, the economic illiteracy is found on both sides. It has become self-reinforcing. The only solace is that the economists are just as guilty.

Inside the 'zero carbon' future home - 0 views

  •
One of the UK's leading housebuilders, Miller Homes, claims to have built a zero carbon house as part of the effort to combat climate change. Zero carbon means no emissions of the global warming gas, carbon dioxide. Over the next few years the rules on how green homes have to be are going to become gradually tougher. And there are warnings that they will push up the cost of buying a new home.

Global Carbon Dioxide Emissions Projected to Increase 39% by 2030 - 0 views

  •
In the absence of specific policies to limit greenhouse gas emissions, the world's energy use is expected to increase by 44% between 2006 and 2030, causing a 39% increase in global carbon dioxide emissions, according to DOE's Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Pan-African News Wire: China Plans Industrial System of Low-Carbon Emissions - 0 views

  •
"BEIJING--CHINA will build an "industrial system" and "consumption pattern" with low carbon emissions, Premier Wen Jiabao said in the government work report delivered at the parliament's annual session yesterday. The country will work hard to develop low-carbon technologies as well as new and renewable energy resources to actively respond to climate change, Wen said at the session of the National People's Congress, adding that the development of smart power grids should be intensified. Electricity | Pew Center on Global Climate Change - 3 views

  •
The electricity sector accounts for almost 35 percent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States, and 40 percent of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Over 80 percent of GHG emissions associated with electricity generation are from the combustion of coal, with nearly all the rest due to natural gas and petroleum combustion. U.S. electricity sales are split among the residential (37 percent), commercial (36 percent), and industrial (27 percent) sectors, where primary uses vary by sector. Over the past 30 years the U.S. electricity sector has become less carbon intensive, and the U.S. economy has grown less electricity-intensive.

IEA report puts doubt into carbon capture - 1 views

  •
If a report released Tuesday by the International Energy Agency is correct, then the $2 billion committed by the Alberta government toward the development of carbon capture and storage is nothing more than a drop in the bucket. The IEA estimates it will cost as much as $10 trillion U.S. between 2010 and 2030 for the world to keep carbon dioxide emissions below 450 parts per million and temperatures from rising more than 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. While that level of investment might be enough for even the most ardent climate change advocate to throw their hands up and surrender, there's a little bit of good news to be found in the report.

An Inconvenient Truth > Carbon Calculator - 0 views

  • We all contribute to global warming every day. The carbon dioxide you produce by driving your car and leaving the lights on adds up quickly. You may be surprised by how much Co2 you are emitting each year. Calculate your personal impact and learn how you can take action to reduce or even eliminate your emissions of carbon dioxide.

International electricity partnership - 0 views

  • Based on the joint Roadmap for a Low-Carbon Power Sector by 2050 presented in December 2009 in Copenhagen, an industry goal of developing national or regional emission reduction trajectories towards a low-carbon future has been set. These trajectories will rely on a common measure of carbon emission intensity. In that respect, supportive, transparent and stable governmental policies are necessary for long-term planning by the industry and to encourage the significant investments needed.Five chapters have been identified for the Industry to work together with governments:

Rwanda earns double by reducing carbon emissions | The Rwanda Focus - 1 views

  • According to Yves Tuyishime, carbon market and CDM investment promotion officer at the Rwanda Environment Management Authority REMA, the mechanism allows developed countries to meet their emissions reduction targets in a cost effective manner.
  • In Rwanda, projects that have the potential to be included in CDM include reforestation, waste management, biomass waste/biogas usage, energy efficiency and renewable energy.

CarbonCulture launches at seven Whitehall Departments - More Associates - 1 views

  •
"CarbonCulture is a new initiative started by More Associates for organisations that want to get really good at saving energy and carbon. Structured as a social enterprise, CarbonCulture exists to help all its members find the best 'moves' they can make to save energy and carbon. CarbonCulture will spread that knowledge amongst the membership so we can all get better at saving as quickly and as cheaply as possible. We've been working for some time with pioneers DECC and Defra to design strategies to achieve initial savings." http://www.carbonculture.net/orgs/decc http://www.carbonculture.net/orgs/dcms http://www.carbonculture.net/orgs/cabinet-office http://www.carbonculture.net/orgs/defra http://www.carbonculture.net/orgs/fco http://www.carbonculture.net/orgs/hmrc http://www.carbonculture.net/orgs/hm-treasury

Kyoto's Great Carbon Offset Swindle - 0 views

  • According to David Victor, a leading carbon trading analyst at Stanford University, as many as two-thirds of the supposed "emission reduction" credits being produced by the CDM from projects in developing countries are not backed by real reductions in pollution. Those pollution cuts that have been generated by the CDM, have often been achieved at a stunningly high cost: billions of dollars (or pounds) could have been saved by cutting the emissions through international funds, rather than through the CDM's supposedly efficient market mechanism.

ENN: U.S. Army works to cut its carbon - 0 views

  •
What if cutting greenhouse emissions could also save the lives of soldiers in Iraq, where fuel-laden convoys make them targets? The U.S. Army says it is happening now in a push to reduce its carbon "bootprint." From forward areas like Iraq and Afghanistan to training ranges in the United States, the Army has been working to limit its use of fossil fuels and make its operations more environmentally sustainable.
  •
Great point, and one I've not heard before. Yet another benefit of going low-carbon. I suspect that there must be many linkages between sustainable energy and the military. Energy efficiency could be another one. It extends the range of equipment, It reduces demands on upstream logistics and so on.
