This is a posting board that shows different job postings made by various companies. I like to look at specific websites for physician groups such as CEP, EMA, etc.

The following is the abstract as stated by the author: "Purpose: To describe factors that ensure a smooth transition from nurse practitioner (NP) student to independent NP during the first year of practice. Data sources: Two contrasting case examples, the authors' experiences, and selected professional literature. Conclusions: Key points to consider upon searching or taking a first NP job include patient, colleague, and clinic factors. Patient factors include mix of patient presentations, complexity of patient presentations, insurance status, and population. Colleague factors include mentorship, charting, mix of providers, and availability of providers. Perhaps most importantly, clinic factors include productivity expectations, practice mission, charting systems, on-call requirements, supervision of other staff, and teaching status. Together, these factors can largely determine whether an NP's days are satisfying or frustrating in a new job. Implications for practice: The transition from NP student to independent NP can be daunting. Although nursing schools and practice sites have responsibilities to ensure the transition is smooth, the new NP is ultimately responsible for the transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]"

A story of a new NP graduate finding a NP job very soon after graduation

I think it provides great insight into transitioning process of becoming an APRN. This article outlines the important areas in which to consider when accepting and working at your first job as an APRN. It compliments the panel today very well.

This article touches on a topic of particular interest to me, specifically how APRN's can help fill a critical shortage of primary care providers in HIV medicine. The article validates that APRN's (NP's) are more than capable of providing high quality care to those living with HIV. Moreover, we are well positioned to fill the provider shortage that is only expected to grow over the next decade and beyond.

As NPs, many of us who have not practiced as nurses, it might be difficult to get your foot in the door of that first job. This is a personal strategy that I came up with to try and help mitigate that for myself, I'm obviously hoping that it works! For those of us who know where we want to work, for me that's in HIV medicine, I think it's important to develop the competencies that your employer will be looking for when you walk in the door. This article does a nice job of laying those out for entry level NPs looking to get into HIV medicine. What I'm trying to do is add as many of these skills to my resume while I'm attending school. My hope is that will give me an edge over NPs that I'm competing with who may not have been in the specialty specific time. If you can identify your desired areas of practice then its just a matter of looking for opportunities to add to your skillset. Look for faculty that have a shared interest, see if you can work on a research project with them. Look for nursing organizations in that specialty. There are two HIV specific organizations for APRNs looking to get into HIV medicine (ANAC and AAHIV). Join them and start networking. Take as much CNE as you can in your specialty topic - much of its free and can be done online at your own pace.

This article discusses the Pros and Cons of using APRNs in both outpatient and inpatient settings. One of the positives is that there are more jobs for the APRN and now APRN's can specialize much like physicians. The downside to that is that there are not as many NPs doing primary care, which is leaving a gap.

This is a handy article for a quick and dirty explanation of the differences in scope, education, etc. between APRNs and PAs. I'm asked questions like this a lot by curious family members as well as patients.

On several occasions, we get asked, "So what exactly is the difference between an NP and a PA?" This article is very recent and does a really nice job of breaking down the key differences between an NP and a PA on a deeper level.

This article does a great job defining the role, education, and scope of the APRN compared to Physician Assistants. This is a great resource to be able understand the distinction for ourselves and to use to educate others about our unique role in health care as APRNs.

This is research article discussing if the "residency" programs that are starting to pop up for new grad APRNs are helpful. I found this interesting because we briefly discussed the residency positions during the new job panel.

This article does a wonderful job of providing the historical background to the pediatric nurse practitioner profession. It touches upon some of the most memorable accomplishments that were achieved both in the specialty itself and the influential role it played on the profession of nurse practitioners in all specialties. This was a very beneficial resource that I utilized for my APRN infographic!

This is a good site for learning how to get through school and get that first job. Written by NPs in the field. It was also helpful to know how NPs fell during their first year out of school as well!

This article discusses the external and internal stressors a novice nurse practitioner will experience in the first few years of his, or her, career. It then discusses the four phases that an NP can expect to endure as they become more confident in the field. Many stressor come from aspects of the job that include billing, referrals and even ownership of ones role as a primary care provider. This piece offers mitigation to the previous stressors with the introduction of a mentor.

This article discusses the transition from student to an NP's first job. Patterns identified included isolation, loss of relationships, changes in professional relationships, and loss of control. Positive aspects of the transition included gains in personal satisfaction and a professional network.
