One of the major keys to success in language acquisition is making reading a habit. Extensive [Sustained] Silent Reading (ESSR) is thus useful as it allows readers to improve their language skills in various aspects (grammar, vocab, spelling etc) and levels without the stress of classroom learning and a teacher's supervision. I aim to read (at least) one English text (eg. short story, article, poetry) a day - although this may be slightly stretched from time to time, depending on academic/personal commitments.

Sync.in is a web based document creation service that allows users to collaborate in realtime. People that have used services like TitanPad or Type With Me will notice a lot of similarities to those services in Sync.in because all three services are based on the EtherPad code made public by Google.  Sync.in provides a place for anyone to start a collaborative document without registering for the service. Once you've started your document it is assigned a unique url that you can share with anyone you want to collaborate with. Sync.in gives each person his or her own text color so that you can keep track of who wrote what. If you want to go back in time to see how the document developed, you can do that with the time slider on Sync.in. Documents on Sync.in can be exported and downloaded to your local computer.

Scriffon is a simple service for writing and publishing online. Scriffon isn't a blogging platform, it's a writing platform. That means that you cannot edit the layout or navigation on the page on which your writing is published. Each writing that you publish is given it's own url. You can go back and edit your writing even after it has been published. If like, you can use multiple pen names under your Scriffon account name too.  Applications for Education Scriffon could be a good way for students to anonymously post their writings online and get feedback from others. For teachers or students who are reluctant to put their names on the web, using a pen name is a good way to publish without putting your real name online.

This site could be a great resource for student projects. The results are often very funny. It could be used for a wide range of learners.

As part of the Library of Congress American Memory series, the CAL Collection of American English Dialect Recordings has been digitized and is now accessible online. This collection of interviews and other speech recordings, primarily from dialect research and oral history projects, provides a centralized source of North American dialect samples, preserving valuable linguistic resources that might otherwise be lost. The collection was donated by CAL to the Library of Congress in 1986 and has been accessible only by personal visit to the Library since then.

Interesting and very readable series of articles about teaching uplugged. Some fav quotes so far: A Dogme lesson is ... a lesson where the teacher is simply another member of the group - somewhat more knowledgeable when it comes to the target language - but who asserts her authority only in order to facilitate the group's common purpose... Rule #10 Teachers themselves will be evaluated according to only one criterion: that they are not boring.
