Kindle for iOS update brings boost to students and visually impaired | ITProPortal.com - 1 views

  •
The recent Kindle updates over the past few months have quite a few teachers. In particular, if you have a textbook on Kindle, you can collate notes by color, which is a major enhancement.  This article does a nice job of summarizing the features important to educators. "The update also brings some changes that should be especially helpful for students and teachers, like the ability to highlight long passages that span multiple pages. In addition, the Notebook feature for textbooks has new filtering options, which should help you more quickly and easily find all your notes, bookmarks, and highlights by colour"

Microsoft to extend Windows XP anti-malware updates one year | ZDNet - 1 views

  •
OK. I think this will be great news for many schools who are still clinging to Windows XP. Microsoft will keep supplying anti-malware updates to Windows XP until april 15, 2014. The March 2013 date caused an outcry among many and we've been working hard to update all the XP machines with extra RAM so they could go to Windows 7. But with the machines working so well on XP many of us wonder why we should dispose of machines that work so well especially in cash crunched times. Take your time - you've got a little longer although for us in the US if they'd go through June 2015 it means we can get 2 more school years out of XP machines. In a sign of the times, it can make all the difference between some kids using technology and some not.

    Pingfm tutorial.

I've been spending some time on the various microblogging places and really don't have time to go to all of them, so now, I've used pingfm to update them all. (There is a place to go to get the most recent invite beta code, that will be my next link.) This great tutorial got me started on pingfm so that it will update all of the services I use. Very nice tutorial.

The Questions - 0 views

  • The Gallup World Poll asks hundreds of core items of all respondents as well as hundreds of region-specific questions around the globe to gauge the unique behavioral climate in the world's different countries and local areas. Gallup asks both the core and region-specific questions over time. This creates a constant flow and update of information and gives World Poll users the ability to compare data and spot key trends. This extensive, continuous survey provides a new access point to the voices, hearts, and minds of the majority of the Earth's population.

Apple says iBooks 2 app reinvents textbooks - latimes.com - 2 views

  •
Ah, epaper. Digital books. They started as barely a blip but now have become the battleground for the next all out war between tech giants. "The app update -- which Apple is calling iBooks 2 and is already released to the iOS App Store -- will allow for textbooks to be sold through the popular app, which in the past sold novels, nonfiction and poetry, but not textbooks. All textbooks sold through the free app, which is available only to Apple's i-devices, will be priced at $14.99 or less -- a stark contrast to the high-priced paper books that fill college bookstores. But the main allure might not be the price as much as the interactive features iBooks textbooks can offer. Apple, which announced the iBooks update at a press event in New York at the Guggenheim Museum, said the iBooks textbook exceeds paper texts in terms of engagement, calling it a durable, quickly searchable book that offers easy highlighting and note-taking  as well as interactive photo galleries, videos, and 3-D models and diagrams.

Amazon Kindle Fire could Burn Up iPad's Lead | ITProPortal.com - 1 views

  •
This survey shows that iPad with the $199 price tag is a 'serious" contender for the ipad. I had someone ask me about Kindle fire vs. iPad. Definitely people are comparing it. Personally, I think it is going to take an OS update the droid system because every time I've used a droid anything the touch hasn't been responsive, but that update is coming.

Microsoft's photo and movie making apps revealed ahead of Windows 8.1 release | The Verge - 7 views

  •
Here comes Windows 8 with a lot of new settings. These are talking about the Windows phone updates but other updates are on the way. "While Windows 8.1 adds a lot of features and improvements across the OS, the built-in apps include some of the biggest changes. Microsoft is detailing a few of the more creative ones ahead of the Windows 8.1 release tomorrow. The photos app in Windows 8 included Facebook and Flickr integration, but the Windows 8.1 version drops that in lieu of some improvements to editing. You can now select auto fix for a selection of different corrections, and there's also manual cropping, red-eye removal, retouch, and other basic contrast and brightness settings. One of the more interesting features is color enhance that lets you pick an area of a photo to brighten up or darken areas of photos."

Encyclopedia Britannica Now Free For Bloggers - 0 views

Encyclopedia Britannica now free for bloggers. yet another reason to blog!
  •
Encyclopedia Britannica is now free for bloggers from an article on 4/18/08 -- yet another reason for our students to blog. (I have students blogging publicly under pseudonyms.) This is fascinating, but also interesting to see how Britannica is playing catch up to Wikipedia in the market it once owned. I wonder, which would be more authoriative to you, a wikipedia quote updated daily, or Brittanica updated less often that doesn't display the authors of its content?

Your Status Updates = Danger - 2 views

If you post future status updates on sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and more telling the world what you are GOING to do, where you are GOING to be, and for how long, you open yourself up to a number of risks. The world does not care what you are doing, and those that are watching, are the people you do not want to care.

Updated teacher observations are key to improvement, report says - Los Angeles Times - 7 views

  •
"The old-fashioned practice of rating instructors by watching them teach is tricky, labor-intensive, potentially costly and subjective - but perhaps the best way to help them improve, according to a study released Friday by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation... "And the observers, typically the school principal, frequently don't know what to look for anyway. "The best way to evaluate teachers, while also helping them improve, is to use several measures - including data-based methods that rely on students' standardized test scores, along with an updated teacher observation system, the report found.
