Scoop.it Passes Diigo as EdReach's #3 Referrer | EdReach - 10 views

  • But the past couple of weeks there’s been a rolling stone gathering lots of moss- and that stone is Scoop.it.
  • Well, I haven’t seen much happen with Scoop.it and educators for the past few months, but then something big happened: Scoop.it launched Scoop.it for Education.
  • I know many educators are fond of Paper.li, another link/newspaper tool, but I’ve never found  that paper-like experience to be of much value, because it’s so… bland.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Paper.li creates these “news” papers based on the people you follow on Twitter, not on your Tweets. Scoop.it creates their paper based on your Scoop.it bookmarks, so it is somewhat more of an authentic experience.

Addressing the Challenges of Inquiry-Based Learning Through Technology and Curriculum D... - 7 views

  •
As I was reading up on inquiry based learning, I found a research paper from 1999 that has been cited almost 500 times. In this paper, you have an overview of inquiry based learning and how the use of technology is an excellent support for inquiry based learning. (They call it TSIL - technology-supported inquiry learning.) This paper talks about the potential and Opportunities. This is a PDF that I'm reading and filing in my personal research cabinet.

Apple says iBooks 2 app reinvents textbooks - latimes.com - 2 views

  •
Ah, epaper. Digital books. They started as barely a blip but now have become the battleground for the next all out war between tech giants. "The app update -- which Apple is calling iBooks 2 and is already released to the iOS App Store -- will allow for textbooks to be sold through the popular app, which in the past sold novels, nonfiction and poetry, but not textbooks. All textbooks sold through the free app, which is available only to Apple's i-devices, will be priced at $14.99 or less -- a stark contrast to the high-priced paper books that fill college bookstores. But the main allure might not be the price as much as the interactive features iBooks textbooks can offer. Apple, which announced the iBooks update at a press event in New York at the Guggenheim Museum, said the iBooks textbook exceeds paper texts in terms of engagement, calling it a durable, quickly searchable book that offers easy highlighting and note-taking  as well as interactive photo galleries, videos, and 3-D models and diagrams.

Nuance Mobile Apps -Mobile Assistant & Text Input Apps  - Nuance - 4 views

  •
My students love the Dragon Dictation app. It is free. Learn to talk into the app and you can dictate papers and more. They were so excited when I taught them how to use this app. It is a must share because students who are more verbal often prefer to dictate papers rather than type them. When I demo this app, first I open it and dictate things - saying funny things about the class and they see the words. Then, I dictate again but start saying "period" "comma" and "new paragraph" so they see how it can add those things to the text. I always end by saying "And ____ ran out of the room today screaming quote I'm afraid of zombies exclamation point end quote." Then I stop and they see how all of the punctuation works. This is a great app and an important one for all tablet and smartphone users.

This is Not a Paper - 8 views

  • November 1995
  • survey of journal editors in education, little enthusiasm for the idea of creating electronic versions
  • changing ideas about what constitutes a publication
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • Questions immediately arise: When was this project published? When was it finished? Who deserves credit as author? Who were the reviewers and who were the audience?
  • In our view, it is not that electronic publication is a panacea or an obviously superior form of scholarly communication across the board; it is that these technologies are already upon us, they are for better or worse in increasing use, and they confront us with issues and choices we need to reflect upon.
  • On the other hand, when certain publications are only available digitally, lacking technological resources or skills will exclude certain audiences
  • Electronic publishing has provided an opportunity
  • Is it useful to have access to tens of thousands of documents, with no reliable way of culling the few dozen that one could actually have time to read?
  • As a result, current conventional notions of copyright would need to be profoundly rethought.
  • This fourth model undoes the very idea of a journal as a unidirectional avenue for dissemination of textual information
