Interest has been both incoming to and outgoing from Ning. The talks around the fate of the high-profile social networking platform - co-founded by Silicon Valley icon and investor Marc Andreessen - are still early and might not result in a sale, although a number of sources said the company was being valued at up to $150 million. That price is well below previous loftier valuations for Ning and would mean only a break-even for investors, who have put close to $120 million into Ning since it was founded in 2004."

From Lucy Gray in my inbox: "Details are a bit sketchy, but "a major education company" is planning to sponsor Nings for primary and secondary educators in a new plan announced by Ning today. The official Ning pricing plan is in place for paying customers, and another education announcement will happen sometime in the near future" Look at this page to see the pricing for non-education networks.

OK, a new feature in Ning is apps -- if you're a teacher, you may not know it is there. Make sure that you either turn this off or filter out which apps they can add. Do it now if you Ning!

Business people and management should read this article about the transformation of business by using workplace communities. "Workplace communities are designed to solve workplace-related challenges" -- they focus on tasks. I would find it interesting to see a business REALLY use technology to change things. Having the business in a business network (OK a NING) and let people tag their posts with the business related PROBLEMS they are having and blog, video, or photograph it-- the tag cloud would tell the business IMMEDIATELY what the problems are in the company. The problem with this model is that there are few corporate executives who REALLY want to know the problems within their organizations. They don't want to be problem solvers, just opportunity creators. However, when managers open their eyes (and I'm a former General Manager myself) and see that two things give business opportunity: problem solving and innovation. And they are directly related. True innovation solves problems. Read this article and think about how you may solve problems using the networks you may now create. If you don't want everyone to know, keep it private and only allow people in your company in.

Tech 4 Learning educational network. Not sure how many Nings one can join, but if you use their tools, here is one for you.

The artist is a Holocaust survivor. Would you be willing to look at it and add it to your blog? The only thing I am unsure about at this point is the commercial aspect of it, if any."

Ning social network about WebQuests

This is a network for high school history students to share ideas and help each other with their history studies. Just let us know you're a teacher when you join that you're a teacher and we'll give you 'Teacher' privileges. You then can admit and monitor your students while they're on the network.

Several new members have already joined up for 2010 and early results are very promising. If you're a high school history teacher we'd love to have you and your students along!
